1. What is a Spring? Give five usages of a spring?

Springs operate as mechanical energy storage units. In many devices, springs

are crucial mechanical elements that are utilized to provide motion, enhance shock
absorption, etc. Take apart any machine that incorporates a mechanism, and chances
are you'll find a spring within. This includes everything from consumer goods to large
industrial machinery.

Usages:

 Door Hinge

 Cars

 Watches

 Toys

 Workout Equipment

2. What is a spring testing machine? Draw diagram of STM.

For efficient and precise testing of tension and compression springs, spring
testing machines are employed. A highly accurate load cell is used by the equipment to
measure force. Mechanical linear scales, digital vernier calipers, and rotary encoders
are all used to measure displacement. The machine's measuring system is based on
the newest microprocessor-based electronics and has tare capability.
3. What is Spring Testing? Discuss briefly the procedures of Spring Testing?

Measuring a spring's mechanical characteristics as they relate to load and

displacement in static testing applications is known as spring testing on a universal test
machine. They could run the spring to a certain displacement and gauge the load using
a universal test machine. The spring might be rejected if the load is either lower or
higher than anticipated.

Procedures of Spring Testing

1. Using the micrometer, measure the diameter of the wire of the spring.

2. To determine the spring coil's diameter, Use a vernier caliper.

3. Evaluate and count the number of turns of the spring.

4. Record the axial deflection in tension or compression that occurs after

placing the spring in the spring test machine and applying an appropriate
load.

5. Take readings for the axial deflection when the load is increased.

6. Draw a line connecting the load and deflection. The spring's stiffness is
determined by the curve's form.

4. What is ‘stiffness’ of a material?

A component's stiffness determines how far it can bend while still resuming its
original shape after the load has been removed. After the load is released, the
component dimensions remain identical, therefore stiffness and elastic deformation go
hand in hand.

5. What is ‘modulus of rigidity’ of a material?

The letters G, N, or C stand for the stiffness or shear modulus, respectively.

According to definition, the ratio of shear stress to shear strain is the modulus of
stiffness. The relationship between the modulus of rigidity and the modulus of elasticity,
an elastic constant whose value is influenced by the nature and characteristics of the
material, is direct.
