TRIGONOMETRIC IDENTITIES

are equalities that involve trigonometric functions and are true for every value of the
occurring variables where both sides of the equality are defined.

The Fundamental trigonometric identities

OTHER IDENTITIES
Even/Odd Identities :
sin(−θ) = − sin θ csc(−θ) = − csc θ cos(−θ) = cos θ
sec(−θ) = sec θ tan(−θ) = − tan θ cot(−θ) = − cot θ

Proving Identities

• An "identity" is a tautology, an equation or statement that is always true, no matter

what.
• To "prove" an identity, you have to use logical steps to show that one side of the
equation can be transformed into the other side of the equation.
• In proving that a trigonometric equation is an identity, it is necessary that we have a
good mastery of the fundamental identities.
• Any one of the following methods on how to prove trigonometric identities may be
used:
• Manipulate the right side to produce the expression on the left side.
• Manipulate the left side to produce the expression on the right side.
• Manipulate both side to bring them down to a common expression.
