T3-8.3- Trigonometry
Geometry 21

Objective: Students will be able to use the sine, cosine and tangent ratios to determine side lengths and angle measures in
right triangles.

What's trigonometry?

Trigonometry depends on _____________. The study of ratios of the sides of RIGHT _______________ leads to more

sophisticated calculation techniques that are widely used in surveying, navigation and the sciences.

More so- trigonometry relates the sides and angle of a single right triangle. Right triangles appear in
numerous applications such as architecture, construction, art, etc. The study of trigonometry can help you
understand the uses of right triangles.

What's the point??

Highway engineers have to make sure that a section of a highway or overpass will correctly match up with a section that
is under construction a considerable distance away. Accurate measurements and calculations are NECESSARY. In this
kind of work, trigonometry is an indispensable tool.

The Ratios:

Sine-

Cosine-

Tangent

Determine the each ratio for the given triangles.

1.) sin A = 2.) sin B =

cos B = cos A =

tan A = tan A =
Let’s actually use trigonometric ratios to solve some problems.

1.) 2.) 3.)

Missing Angle Measures

Refresh: What does θ mean? What does it stand for?

How can I use trig ratios to determine a missing angle measurement?

Use the ______________________ function on your calculator!

1.) 2.) 3.)

4.) Determine the 𝑚𝑚 < 𝐴𝐴 if the side opposite < A is 24 cm and the adjacent leg is 26 cm.

Let’s kick it up a notch!  Draw a picture for each problem. Round answers to nearest tenth when necessary.

1.) A skateboarding ramp is 16 in. high and rises at an angle of 18°. Determine how long is the base of the ramp?

2.) The bottom of a slide makes an angle of 24° with the ground. If the slide is 7 ft long, how high is the ladder that you
need to climb to get to the top of the slide?

3.) A 14 ft ladder is leaning against a building. If the ladder touches the wall 11 ft above the ground, determine the angle
the ladder makes with the ground.
