Grammar: Gerund or Infinitive


Objetivos:
To differentiate between gerund and infinitive
To learn when to use gerund and when to use
infinitive
To recognise when a verb is followed by gerund or
infinitive
Gerund or Infinitive?
Gerund (verb-ing):
- subject of a sentence
- after certain verbs and expressions (I can’t stand/
I feel like…)
- after prepositions (of,from,on,above…)

Infinitive (to verb):


- after certain verbs
- after adjectives (happy, sad, boring…)
Notice!
like, love, hate, start, begin, continue, prefer +
gerund / infinitive = NO change in meaning.
Ex: When did you start to draw?
When did you start drawing?

stop, remember and forget + gerund /infinitive=


change in meaning.
Ex: We stopped to watch the sunset
We stopped watching the sunset and went inside
Gerund (verb-ing): Infinitive (to verb):
- subject of a sentence
