DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 9

QUARTER 2
Content Standard:
The type of bonds that carbon forms that result in the diversity of carbon compounds
Performance Standard:
Employ appropriate techniques using the compound microscope to gather data about very
small objects.
I. OBJECTIVE:

A. Most Essential Learning Competency

Recognize the general classes and uses of organic compounds
(S9MT-IIh-18).
B. Instructional Objectives:
1. Give the common uses of acetone, and formalin.
2. Relate the structures of acetone, and formalin to the carbonyl compounds where they
belong.
3. Display cooperation and teamwork in performing the activity
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Organic Compound
KBI: Show cooperation in activities

III.Learning Resources

A. Materials: Chalk, Blackboard, Pictures

B. References: Grade 9 Science Learner’s Module pages 262-276
Grade 9 Science Teacher’s Material pages 306-314

IV. PROCEDURE
A. Drill/Elicit
Recall the structure formula of alcohol

B. Engage
Show a bottle of formaldehyde (formalin) with a preserved animal or insect in it. For
acetone, demonstrate how to remove nail polish using the compound.

C. Explore

In this activity, the students will be made to recognize other different important
organic compounds: acetone and formaldehyde. These compounds are commonly
used at home and at school.

Activity: What is common between acetone and formalin?

Materials
 acetone
 formalin
 paper
 pen
 manila paper

Procedure
1. With your group, talk about the uses of the simple compounds shown to you
by your teacher.

Q1. What are the common uses of acetone and formalin?

2. With your group, use the illustrations of the structures of acetone, and
formaldehyde (formalin) below to answer the questions.

Q2. What types of bonds do the common compounds have in their structures?
Q3. Formalin and acetone are common carbonyl-containing compounds. Why do you
think they both belong in the group of carbonyl-containing compounds?

D. Explain
Let the two students from two different groups give their answers in the class.

Activity: What is common between acetone and formalin?

Q1. What are the common uses of acetone and formalin? Acetone is commonly used
as a solvent and nail polish remover. Formaldehyde is used as a preserving agent
and disinfectant.

Q2. What types of bonds do the common compounds have in their structures? The
structures of acetone and formaldehyde all have single and double bonds.

Q3. Formalin and acetone are common carbonyl-containing compounds. Why do you
think they both belong in the group of carbonyl-containing compounds? The
structures of acetone, and formaldehyde both have a carbonyl functional group.
These make them carbonyl-containing compounds.

E. Elaborate
After the student’s presentation of their answers, start facilitating a discussion by
showing the students the compounds, acetone, and formalin.

Give the common uses of acetone, and formalin. Relate the structures of acetone and
formalin to the carbonyl compounds where they belong.

What subject area can you apply our topic to?

F. Evaluate

Direction: Get ½ sheet of paper. Give some uses of acetone and formalin and answer
the following question.

What types of bonds do the common compounds have in their structures?

G. Extend
Review for a long quiz.
