September 12, 2019 [LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 9]

I. Objectives:
1. Content Standard: The learners demonstrate an understanding of…
 The type of bonds that carbon forms that result in the diversity of carbon compounds.

2. Performance standard: The learners shall be able to:

 Analyze the percentage composition of different brands of two food products and
decide on the products’ appropriate percentage composition.
3. Learning Competencies/Objectives:
 Explain how the structure of the carbon atom affects the type of bonds it forms. (S9MT-
IIg17)
 Recognize the general classes and uses of organic compounds. (S9MT-IIh18)
4. Specific objectives: The learners will be able to…
 Analyze the difference between acetone and formalin.
 Accomplish a graphic organizer showing the similarities and differences of acetone and
formalin.
II. Subject Matter
1. Topic : Acetone and Formalin
2. Reference : Teacher’s Guide
3. Materials: Visual aid, Marker, etc.
III. Learning Task
1. Review
 Review to the students the following to the students.
o Hydrocarbons
o Alcohol
2. Motivation
How do we preserve the dead bodies of our loved ones temporarily?
How do you remove the nail polish?
3. Lesson Proper
3.1 Activity
Have the students answer activity number 6 in their Learners Module on pages 140-141.
Have them also answer the guide questions.
3.2 Analysis
 What is carbonyl group?
 What is acetone?
 What is formalin?
 How do they differ?
3.3 Abstraction
 Carbonyl group is the functional group of aldehydes and ketones just like the
hydroxyl group of alcohol.
 Acetone is used in removing nail polish. It is also used as solvent in some industrial
preparations such as production of plastic materials.
 Formaldehyde is a compound that is commonly known as formalin. Its common use is
to preserve organic materials because of its ability to crosslink proteins including
enzymes. This is also the reason why this kind of organic compound is used in the
embalming process.
 The structures of acetone and formaldehyde all have single and double bonds. The
structures of these compounds both have carbonyl functional group. This makes
them carbonyl containing groups. They differ in uses and functions.
3.4 Application
 Using the Venn diagram, illustrate the similarity and difference of acetone and
formaldehyde.
