2. How many atoms are there in;
a. 0.5 mole of H2?
b. 2.0 moles of Ca?
3. How many molecules are there in;
a. 0.25 mole of H2O?
b. 5 moles of Ca(OH)2
4. Calculate the number of atoms in 6 moles of He.
5. How many moles and the corresponding number of molecules are there in 100 grams of the
following substances?
SUBSTANCES NO. OF MOLES NO. OF MOLECULES

1. Methane CH4 ___________________ ______________________

2. Glucose C6H12O6 ___________________ ______________________
3. Ethanol C2H5OH ___________________ ______________________

Analysis/ Concept Formation

a. Mole of O3 = Mass in grams O3

Molar mass
= 48g of O3
48g/mole O3
= 1 mole O3
b. Mole of O3 = No. of Particle x _________1 ___________
Avogadro’s Number
23
= 9.03 x 10 atoms x ________1 mole O3____
6.022 x 1023 atoms
= 1.50 mole O3
c. No. of atom = No. of moles x Avogadro’s number
= 0.5 mol H2 x 6.022 x 1023 atoms
1 mol H2
= 3.0 x 1023 atom H2
d. No. of atom = 2.0 moles Ca x 6.022 x 1023 atoms
1 mol Ca
= 1.2 x 1024 atoms Ca
e. No. of molecules = 0.25 moles H2O x 6.022 x 1023molecules
1 mol H2O
= 1.51 x 1023molecules H2O
f. No. of molecules = 5 moles Ca(OH)2 x 6.022 x 1023molecules
1 mol Ca(OH)2
g. Calculate the number of atoms in 6 moles of He.

No. of atoms = 6 moles He x 6.022 x 1023atoms

1 mol He
= 3.6 x 1024atoms He
h. How many moles and the corresponding number of molecules are there in 100 grams of
the following substances?

SUBSTANCE NO. OF MOLES NO. OF MOLECULES

a. Methane CH4 6.25 3.8 x 1024

b. Glucose C6H12O6 0.56 3.4 x 1023
c. Ethyl alcohol C2H5OH 2.17 1.3 x 1024
Abstraction

A mole contains the same number of particles(atoms, ions, or molecules). It is a specific

number of chemical units.

A mole is a quantity of substance that contains Avogadro’s number of units or particles,

which is equal to 6.022 x 1023

Molar mass (MM) is the mass in grams of one mole of a substance.

For elements, it is numerically equal to the atomic mass, and for compounds, it is
numerically equal to the molecular or formula mass.

The amount of substance can be expressed in three ways:

a) Mass b) Moles c) Number of particles
The interconversion among number of moles, number of particles and mass is expressed in
the diagram.

Application/ valuing
6.022 x 1023 is so important in chemistry that it has a name. It is called Avogadro’s number and
has the symbol N. It is named in honor of Amadeo Avogadro, an Italian chemist, who, in 1811,
made a critical contribution which helped greatly with the measurement of atomic mass.
FREONS are carbon compounds containing fluorine and chlorine as coolants, refrigerants, and
propellants. They are unreactive and are not destroyed in air. What would happen to the
environment if more moles of freons would be released into the atmosphere? What could we do
to minimize the release of freons to the environment?
IV – EVALUATION
