I. OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the lesson, the students should be able to:

A. Determine the percentage composition of the given substances given its chemical
formula
B. Apply the concept of percentage composition through solving problems
C. Realize that the amount of substance intake can be monitored with the use of
percentage composition
D. Create their own version of commercial product advertisements
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Percentage Composition of a Compound
References:
Textbook: Science Phoenix IX
Websites: youtube.com
Slideshare.com
Duration: 60 minutes
Materials: PowerPoint Presentation, Mini-white boards, Marker, Printed
Barcode IM’s, QR Code Application, Cellular Phones, Commercial Clip
Photos
Scientific Approach: Discovery Approach, Inquiry-Based
Scientific Skills: Computing, Thinking
Prior Knowledge:
Students should previously have a basic understanding of the mole concept and its
conversions from particles to moles and mass to moles;
Students should also have an understanding of the molar mass computation.
III. PROCEDURE
A. ROUTINE ACTIVITIES
Prayer
Checking of Attendance
B. PRIMING ACTIVITY

Task B.1 (Review) Unravel the Barcode: The class will be divided into five groups.
Each group is required to unlock the code using the QR code application to reveal the
task. Once the code is unlocked, each group is then given 10 seconds to raise their
answers. Mechanics of the game will be shown through a PowerPoint presentation.
TASK 1: What is the molar mass of carbon in the compound ethene (C2H4)?
Show your answer in 10 seconds.
TASK 2: What is the total molar mass of butane (C 4H10)? Show your answer in
10 seconds.

C. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES
C.1- ANALYSIS:
Task C.1 – (Activity Proper) Tagline Shout out! Sets of commercial clips’
characters/photos will be shown in class and each group will say the taglines of these
commercial clips. The first to correctly shout out the taglines will be given points.
The following are the photos and taglines of the commercial clips:

“Ikaw, para kanino ka bumabangon?”

(Nescafe)

“Asim Kilig!” “ Makulay ang buhay sa

sinabawang gulay”(Knorr)

“Batang may laban!” (Bonakid)

“Wala pa ring tatalo sa Alaska!” (Alaska)

“Lasap na lasap, real na real, real na real! Dan-dan-

dan, dalandan!”
(Nesfruta)

“Energy, energy gap!” (Milo)

“ Kada bonding, CHIPPY!”

“ Downy, Boom-boom POW!”

Guided Questions:
1. What are the components of these products?
2. Can you determine the composition of each substance for each product?
3. How do we calculate the composition of each substance?

C.2- ABSTRACTION:

What is a Percent Composition?

o The percent composition by mass of a compound represents the percent that
each element in a compound contributes to the total mass of the compound.
How do I calculate for the percentage composition of each compound?
Formula:
Mass % of an element = total mass of an element x 100
total mass of compound

Example: What is the percent composition of water (H2O)?

Step 1: Figure out the molar mass of each substance from the formula (H2O)

2 mol Hydrogen x 1.01g = 2.02g

1mol Oxygen x 16.00g = 16.00g

molar mass of water = 18.02g

Step 2: Divide the answer for each atom by the molar mass and multiply by 100 to
get a percentage

2.02 g of H / 18.02 g of H2O x 100 % = 11.21% Hydrogen

16.00 g of O / 18.02 g of H2O x 100 % = 88.79% Oxygen

Your percentages should add up to 100%

Task C.2: Solving Problem - Each group is given problems to solve. Answers should be
written in the whiteboards provided. After which is the presentation of their output.

C.3- APPLICATION:

Task C.3 - Commercial Ads Presentation: From C.1 Activity on commercial

tagline, each group is tasked to re-make their own version of the commercial clip
highlighting the compound/substance they have calculated. (See attached rubric)

C.4- ASSESSMENT:

Directions: Solve the following problems concisely by showing all the steps.

Point System:

Total Molar Masses – 5 points

Percent Composition of each element- 2 points each

1. In cold areas, many fishes and insects, including the common housefly, produce
large amounts of glycerol, C3H8O3 to lower the freezing point of their blood. What
percentage of Oxygen is present in glycerol?
2. Ethyl Butanoate (C3H7C00C2HP) is a substance responsible for the aroma of
pineapple. What is the percentage composition of hydrogen present in Ethyl
Butanoate?

IV- ASSIGNMENT:
Pick five food products found at home. Check their labels and list down two compounds
present in each food label. Calculate the percentage composition of the chosen compound in each
food labels.
