TOPIC 4: Management of Classroom Structure and Activities

Try this!

OH CLASSROOM! MY CLASSROOM! : Try to recall one of your favourite classroom, either

in your elementary or secondary school years. (NOTE: Focus on one). What can you remember
about its physical structure? Complete the following activities below.

A. Draw the room layout of the class that you had before in the box below.

Source: Field Study 1 – A Guide for 21st Century Student Teachers (Pawilen, et.al.,2019)

1. What can you say about the physical structure of your classroom?

➢ The classroom is too small to cater all of us because we’re so many in the class, so some of the
furniture like a mini library is not available in our room. The classroom is organized trough what
is really needed and for those furniture’s that are not so really needed inside the room our teacher
didn’t put it inside so that we can still have space to move around the classroom.

2. What do you think were the things your teacher have considered when he/she
arranged the classroom?

➢ The space of the classroom because she needs to minimize the furniture’s that she will put inside
our classroom since we only have a small room, she prioritizes the arrangement of the chairs so
that we can still move around even though we are too loaded inside.

3. What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of this kind of physical setup?

➢ The advantage is that even we crowded inside there are still spaces between the students and we
can move freely but the disadvantage is we can access any learning books inside our classroom
since we don’t have any mini library inside.

Think ahead!

1. Do you think that the classroom structure was consistent with your teacher’s objectives?
Why? Why not?

➢ Yes, because during the lesson proper we have our own space to do our activity on our own and
even in grouping.

2. How did the classroom setup affect you and your other classmates’ performance and
learning?

➢ Even though we’re many inside the classroom we can still actively participate in activity that is
given to us.

3. If you were the teacher, what kind of classroom structure would you adopt to maximize
the students’ learning?

➢ Set up first the desks and other furniture in the classroom so that you can easily access each corner
of the room and always observe the kids. Additionally, the placement of furniture should
maximize standard educational activities. All of the supplies in the classroom should have clear
labels, and they should be arranged such that they are simple to find when needed.

Read and Ponder

Providing a safe learning environment to students is any teacher’s goal. Thus, to ensure
that students feel safe, a teacher should allow students to be themselves, commit mistakes,
and be in a fair environment. A fair learning environment promotes teaching that considers
varied mode of delivery for all lessons. This does not enforce uniformed expectations to all
students as well as the academic experiences all the time. But instead, this offers lessons,
strategies and challenges which addresses student’s individual needs.

Teachers who give great importance to academic achievements bring about

inequalities in the classroom because this often alienate students that are not as gifted
academically as the others. Spratt and Florian (2013) describe a fair learning environment as
a place that promotes an inclusive pedagogy which delivers diverse experiences, activities
and opportunities. Hart et.al. (2004) also supported that an inclusive pedagogy endorses a fair
learning environment because students are given the chance to acquire knowledge from a
series of opportunities and experiences by the teacher. Thus, it is very vital for teachers to
adopt various teaching techniques that suit the different learning capabilities of the students.
