FS 7 Aspects of a Classroom

SPARK Your Interest

This episode tackles classroom management and discipline. It focuses on the personal and
physical aspects of classroom management which are central to teaching and therefore must
be consistently implemented.

TARGET Your Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this episode, I must be able to:

 Identify the two (2) aspects of classroom management; and

 Determined the classroom management strategies that the Resource Teacher
employed in his/her class.

REVISIT the Learning Essentials

Classroom management refers to the wide variety of skills and techniques that teachers use to
keep students organized, orderly, focus, attentive, on tasks and academically productive in
class.

Importance of Effective Classroom Management

 increases chance of student success

 paves the way for the teacher to engage students in learning
 helps create an organized classroom environment
 increases instructional time
 creates consistency in the employment of rules and regulations
 aligns management strategies with school wide standards
 decreases misbehavior in the classroom
 give student boundaries as well as consequences

Two aspects of Classroom Management

1. Personal Classroom Management consist of managing your own self to ensure order
and discipline in your class. It includes:
1.1. Voice
1.2. personal grooming
1.3. attendance
1.4. punctuality
1.5. personal graciousness
Managing yourself as a teacher contributes to the order and wellbeing of your class.
2. Physical classroom consists of managing the learning environment. Attending to this
physical elements of the learning environment ensures the safety, security and order
in the class. It includes:
2.1 ventilation
2.2 lightning
2.3 acoustic
2.4 seating arrangement
2.5 structure / design of the classroom
2.6 physical space / learning stations

Some Effective Classroom Management Strategies

1. Model to the students how to act in different situations.

2. Establish classroom guidelines.
3. Document the rules.
4. Refrain from punishing the entire class.
5. Encourage initiative from class.
6. Offer praise and rewards
7. Use non-verbal communication.
8. Take time to celebrate group effort.
9. Let student work in groups.
10. Interview students assess their needs.
11. Address bad behavior quickly.
12. Consider peer teaching.
13. Continuously engage the students.
14. Assign open-ended project.
15. Write group contacts.

OBSERVE
Observe a class and interview the Resource Teacher. Ask how the personal and physical
aspects of classroom management ensure proper classroom management and discipline.

Check if these aspects observed in the classroom.

ASPECTS OF CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT YES NO

1. Personal Classroom Management
1.1 Is the teacher well-groomed that he/she demands respect /
from the learners?
1.2 Is the teacher’s voice modulated and can be heard by the /
entire class?
1.3 Was the teacher present in class? /
1.4 Did the teacher arrive on time in class? /
1.5 Does the teacher exude a positive attitudes towards /
teaching?
2. Physical Classroom Management
2.1 Is the classroom well-ventilated? /
2.2 Is the lightning good enough? /
2.3 is the classroom free from noise? /
2.4 Does the seating arrangement provide better interaction? /
2.5 Is the design/structure of the room inviting to classroom /
activities?
2.6 Is the Physical space/ learning station clear from obstruction? /
ANALYZE
Analyze the different elements of personal/physical classroom management and answer the
following questions?

1. How does the voice of the teacher affects classroom instruction?

 One of the most important thing that a teacher should learn is how to speak in
front of the students with just right authority, not too much, not too
intimidating but just enough authority to gain students respect and to send the
message that inside the classroom, teacher has the most power. Teachers voice
really has a huge impact to classroom instruction, which is why the teacher
must always remember that when he/she speaks, everyone will hear and
everyone listens. In some cases, students sitting at the back would complain
that they cannot hear their teacher talking in front and as a result, they do not
understand a thing of what the teacher have discussed and this will certainly
have a domino effect especially if students are so dependent on teachers for
their learning and understanding of lessons. This being said, teachers should
make sure that they always speak with authority, clarity and with loud enough
voice for every student in the class to hear. Teachers performance, the way
they speak and deliver their lesson must always go hand in hand with their
learning materials for better learning outcome.
2. How does the punctuality of the teacher affects classroom discipline?
 Teachers are supposed to be the role model of each and every student in the
class especially if one is handling lower years such as Grade 7 and 8, and to be
a role model, one must embody the characteristics that he/she wanted his/her
students to embody as well. The punctuality of the teacher affects classroom
disciplines a lot because when the teacher is punctual and he/she is actually
living by the rules inside the classroom, then students will be motivated and
inspired as well to do the same since the teacher have set a good example for
them. However, if the teacher keeps lecturing the students about how to be
punctual, always come on time, and to always respect everyone’s schedule but
don’t actually do the same and is always late to come in class, then all the
lecturing will be just pointless because students will never have that discipline
since the teacher is not himself/herself disciplined. Students are always
looking up on their teacher as their leader, role model, and influencer and
having that power to influence students is a responsibility and the teacher must
do a good job, live by the rule, set as great example, and be a good influence.
3. Why do we need to check on the physical aspects of classroom management?
 Students are staying in the classroom for 5 days a week and 8 hours a day.
Inside the classroom is where the teaching and learning process happens and
this being said, teachers must see to it that the classroom is ready and
conducive for learning. Quality education is not just about having complete
learning materials and well-designed lesson plan, quality education includes
the comfort of the students while they are inside the classroom and learning.
Having that comfortable classroom for learners with certainly have positive
effect on their education.

REFLECT
Reflect on the aspects of personal and classroom management.

1. What does this statement mean to you as a future teacher? Explain. “No amount of
good instruction will come out without effective classroom management.”
 Classroom rules and regulation, class routines and procedures, complete
learning materials and well-designed lesson plan are all basic requirements in
handling a class, but will this be enough to secure and come out with a good
instruction? Certainly, these things are important in providing students quality
education they deserve, these things play a significant role in the teaching and
learning process but having all these will never be enough if one does not have
effective classroom management. This means that as a teacher, one must learn
how to effectively use these resources to achieve better learning outcome.
What is the use of having all of these things if the teacher does not know to
apply it effectively and systematically in a class? So along with having all
these resources, teachers must also come up with an effective classroom
management to go along with these things and with everything combined and
arranged accordingly, there will be high chance of achieving quality
education.
2. What are your plans in ensuring effective classroom management?
 There are so many things to consider in ensuring effective classroom
management but in my case, I would like to have the following; Establish
Clear Expectations, Build Positive Relationships, Establish Classroom
Routines, Use Positive Reinforcement and Engage Students Actively.
Although there will certainly be changes in the future and most probably I will
add more strategies depending on my learners but for the mean time, I believe
that these things are really important to be considered in ensuring effective
classroom management.

ANALYZE
Analyze the checklist you have accomplished and answer the given questions:

1. How many strategies were employed by the Resource Teacher? Did these contribute
to better classroom management? Explain your answer.
 Having been able to answer the checklist and based from my observation,
there were 10 strategies employed by my cooperating teacher to her class and I
must say that these strategies really contributed a lot to better classroom
management. Let’s have for example the “Use of non-verbal communication”
this strategy is often used by my cooperating teacher to silent everyone and
stop them from making unnecessary noises during class discussion. When
students are producing too much noise and everyone is getting out of control
already, instead of shouting to keep everyone quiet, my cooperating teacher
would just stand there at the front, not speak a word and just look at the
students blankly. Noticing her action, the students then would automatically
stop from talking and quiet their selves. Another strategy is “Addressing bad
behavior quickly” during class discussion or even during vacant time and there
is/are students who is/are behaving inappropriately, my cooperating teacher
immediately calls their attention and have a conversation with them to discuss
the matter and it really solves the problem.
2. What were not used by the Resource Teacher? Were these important? What should
have been used instead? Explain.
 The strategies that I haven’t observed used by my cooperating teacher based
from the checklist provided are as follows; Document the rules, Interview
students to assess their needs, and Write group contracts. Although I believe
that these strategies are important in ensuring effective classroom management
and should be employed in the class, but I am certain that there is/are valid
reason why my cooperating teacher haven’t used these strategies. Just like for
example the “Document the Rules” although there are rules and regulations set
inside the classroom, but you cannot really see it posted on the wall because
there is an order of the removal of wall designs/decorations in the class as
mandated by the Vice President of the Philippines and also the DepEd
Secretary Sara Duterte. So even though it was an effective and important
strategy but because of certain circumstance, it was not enforced.

REFLECT
As a future teacher, reflect on the observations then answer the given question

1. What classroom management strategies do I need to employ to respond to diverse

types of learners?
Diversity is in our daily lives in all spaces and dealing with diverse learners
inside the classroom is one thing a teacher should expect and be prepared with, and
when coming up with classroom management strategies, it is one important thing to
consider. Both teachers and students benefit from good classroom management,
which is defined as the activities educators do to establish and preserve a setting that
supports learning. Well-run classrooms can benefit students by reducing behavioral
issues, increasing engagement, and improving academic achievement.
Diversity brings new perspectives into a classroom. Students of different
genders, races, backgrounds, etc. bring multiple insights and thoughts into a
classroom. In the future, as I become an educator myself, the classroom management
strategies that I will employ to respond to the diverse types of learners that I have are
as follows; Use Polite Language, Positive Reinforcement, Get to Know My Students,
Encourage Student Collaboration, Incorporating Diversity in Lessons, and Practice
Cultural Sensitivity.
Addressing the diverse needs of learners will help to ensure that 'access to
education is not compromised by poverty, social class, gender, race and learning
disability' (West-Burnham and Coates, 2005). I believe that having these strategies
will not only allow me to respond to diverse types of learners that I have but most
importantly, having these strategies will help me educate students to understand
differences, encourage them to see it in a more positive way than negatively by letting
them learn from one another through assigning them collaborative activity. These
strategies will as well lead me into making my class unite despite their differences.
SHOW Your Learning Artifacts
Show piece(s) of evidence of learning to capture the classroom management strategies used
by your Resource Teacher.

One of the classroom management

strategy employed by my cooperating
teacher is allowing students to work by
group. This way, students are able to
collaborate with their classmates, they
share and brainstorm ideas for the best
outcome of their work. In photo are
Grade 7 SPJ doing their group activity
assigned to them.

This photo was taken during a class

discussion where students are asked to
read silently a selection from the module
given to them. Another way of
introducing students the concept of
diversity is by giving them the chance to
read random stories coming from
different literatures. Through this, they
may be able to become aware of other
people lives and practices.

My cooperating teacher as well

allows students to present their work in
front giving them the opportunity to
practice public speaking in a very
simple way, which I think is an
effective strategy considering that
students are taking Special Program for
Journalism which includes a lot of
talking and public speaking.
