FIELD STUDY 1 - LEARNING

EPISODE 5
Creating an Appropriate Learning Environment

Activity 5.1 Managing Time, Space, and Learning Resources

Resource Teacher: Erma E. Redondo Teacher`s Signature ____________
School: Surok E. S. Grade/Year Level: Kindergarten
Subject Area: General Date: 10-20-2020

OBSERVE

1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their
ages.

2. How many boys are there? How many girls?

3. Focus on their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior?

4. Can the learners already work independently?

5. Describe their span of attention.

ANALYZE

1. Are there areas in classroom for specific purposes (storage of teaching aids,
books, students` belongings, supplies, etc.)? Describe this area. Will it make a
difference if these areas for specific purposes are not present?
 Yes, there are areas for teaching aids, supplies of the students and their
belongings and also an area where toys are present and students can play.
If these areas will not be present in the classroom, maybe kids will be bored
and the classroom will not be organized as everything can be place
everywhere without its specific area. They can also place the toys
everywhere and this will make the class messy.

2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room? List them down. Do these
rules reinforce positive behavior?
 Yes, these rules reinforce positive behavior as these teaches kids on how to
act in a proper manner at a young age.

3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules? If the Resource
Teacher is available, ask him/her to describe the process. What`s the effect of
students` participation in rule-making on student`s behavior?
 Nope, as there are only in Kindergarten.

4. What are the daily routines done by the Resource Teacher? (Prayer,
attendance, assignment of monitors, warm-up activities, etc.) How are they done?
 First thing they do is the prayer, then singing of the national anthem and
songs, do the exercise, checking of the attendance, warm-up activities,
recess, quite time, playing the nursery rhymes, lecture and activities again.

5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement? Does

this help in, managing the class?
 Yes, I think the seating arrangement is based on the comfort of the student.
On which they prefer to seat, then it’s okay. I’ve observed that this
arrangement gives kids to interact with their peers and they can easily
communicate with them.

6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?

 The noise of the classroom is being managed in a nice way. The teacher
always asked them to do a song with action that has end with their mouth is
being closed or zip using their finger tip.

7. If a learner is not following instruction or is off-task, what does the Resource

Teacher do? Describe the behavior strategies used.
 If the learner is not following instruction, the teacher only warn the student
that he/she will be the last to go home or will be the last to take the snacks.
This is effective as the learner always follow the teacher whenever she did
that.

8. What does the Resource Teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (behavior

strategies)
 She always praises those who perform positive behavior in the classroom
and tell kids that being good kids always follow what the teacher says in
order not to be punished.

REFLECT

1. Why do you need to enforce positive discipline?

 This is really necessary so that the instruction will not become difficult for the teacher
to implement. Teaching does not only focus on acquiring knowledge but this includes
good behavior of the learner as it will reflect to their action in the classroom. The way
they behave and the way they act in school is part of the teacher’s classroom
management.

ANALYZE

1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learners` behavior?
 The classroom organization and routines affect the learners` behavior in a
way that they become responsible about their behavior in class. It also gives
them manage their learning and builds better relationship with their
classmates and teacher.

2. What should the teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom
organizational routines? What theories and principles should you have in mind?
 The following theories and principles should be considered by the teacher in
designing classroom organizational routines:
 Cognitive theory-includes giving attention to the mental processes of
the learner and the construction of their knowledge.
 Behaviorist theory that focuses on the learner’s behavior which also
includes reinforcing positive behavior and involving exercises.
 Psychoanalytic Theory that considers thoughts and feelings of the
students.
3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the
learners? In motivating students? Why were they effective?
 Reinforcing Positive Behavior- this makes the learners to become more
motivated when it comes to participation and involvement in class. They are
also encouraged to perform a positive behavior.
 Setting Rules Together with the students- allows learner to improve behavior
management and they will be able to know how to behave in order to avoid
being punished.
 Maintaining the Classroom Routines- ensures that students know what’s
coming next and helps to establish guidelines and behavior expectations.

REFLECT

Reflect on the following and write your insights.

1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade year-level
do you see yourself? What routines and procedures would you consider for this
level? Why?
 I can see myself organizing a Grade-one classroom and I would consider the
following routines and procedures for this level:
 Greeting every student upon arrival and asking how they’re doing
before the class starts.
 Giving them an exciting or warm-up exercises (songs/dance/games).
 During recess or snack time, I will inform them to avoid getting out and
every one of them should bring their own snack.
 Giving students a chance to participate in class.
 Falling in line during the dismissal.

2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would you
choose these rules?
 Listening Bodies
I will listen and follow direction.
 Raised Hands
I will raise my hand to share ideas.
 Quite Mouths
I will use a soft voice.
 Walking Feet
I will walk in school to be safe.
 Helping Hand
I will use my hands for helping and not hurting.
 Caring Heart
I will use kind words
 These rules will help the learners to improve positive behavior and build
strong relationship with peers and teacher. These will show how they will
perform politeness, respectful, responsible and become an active student in
the class.

3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?

 Yes, they should be involved in making the class rules so that teacher will
determine if these rules will be effective and followed in class and for the
learners also to become aware on how to behave and avoid unnecessary
things at school.
