Activity 5.1 Managing time, space and learning resources

OBSERVE: Observe and use the observation sheet provided for you to document your
observations.
1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their ages.
Answer:
The pupils ages are ranging from 8 to 10 years old.

2. How many boys are there? How many girls?

Answer:
There are 36 students currently enrolled in the class that I observe, to whom 14 are
boy and 22 are girls.

3. Focus on their behavior. Are they already to manage their own behavior?
Answer:
Their behavior is a bit absurd; they tend to seek attention most of the time, making the
class a little bit noisy. Because of their ages I do believe that they still need time for them to
be able to mange their own behavior.

4. Can the learners already work independently?

Answer:
From my perspective of the phrase “work independently” which is the ability to
complete task on one’s own with someone supervising and giving instructions or directions, I
do believe that they can work independently, but it should be done with a simple explanation
or sample from the teacher.

5. Describe their span of attention.

Answer:
The span of attention depends on the teaching style or the part of the teaching-
learning process. They tend to be more attentive when the teachers is discussing the lesson
with the aid of audio-visual presentation, from my observation they are more attentive the
things that they seems to be interested in.

practices. It is also good to ask the teacher for additional information, so you can
validate your observation. Write your notes below and then organize your data in the
Table that follows.
1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (Storage for teaching aids books,
students, belongings, supplies, etc.)? Describe these areas. Will it make a difference if
these areas for specific purposes are not present?
Answer:
From my observation the teaching aids can be found on multiple areas within the
room, there’s a dedicated reading corner with a small side board that holds reading materials
in English, Filipino and MTB. On the back left part of the room I have found the book shelf
with the resource materials need by the students during classes. There is also a tall
sideboard beside the teachers table where you can find the LPs, Reports, Learning
Materials, and teaching materials needed during the class.

2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room? List them down. Do these rules reinforce
positive behavior?
Answer:
There are rules posted within the classroom, especially the new addition the New
Normal Rules, such as wearing of Facemask, cleaning of hands, sanitizing and social
distancing. There are also rules posted such as listen carefully, read clearly, write neatly,
and view keenly.
Yes, these rules reinforce positive behavior, because these rules tend to protect them
from the deadly virus and make the learning-teaching process efficient.

3. Did these students participate in making the classroom rules? If there is Resource Teacher
is available, ask him or her to describe the process. What's the effect of student’s
participation in rule-making on students’ behavior.
Answer:
Yes, there are unwritten rules that the students follow, such as keep quiet, don’t litter,
arrange the chairs properly, and always come early. These rules where formed upon the
agreement between the pupils and the teacher. The teacher asks them to suggest some
rules that is needed to be follow in doing certain activities.

4. What are the daily routines done by the Resource Teacher? (Prayer attendance assignment
of monitors, warm up activities and etc.) How are they done?
Answer:
The teacher always starts the class with a prayer, do a short exercise, settle the class
then checks the attendance, she often asks the class who’s absent and marks it on her
records. After checking the attendance, the teacher gathers the attention of the students and
recall the lesson from the previous day. After reviewing the lesson, the teacher proceeds
with introducing the new lesson or checking of the assignment first is she have given one.

5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement? Does this help in
managing the class?
Answer:
Yes, the teacher aims to create an efficient network for teaching-learning process
therefore the basis of the seating arrangement is a buddy system. The buddy systems
involve two individuals, a good performing student and a poor performing student, they sit
together with the quest to help the poor performing student cope up with the lesson.

6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?

Answer:
The noise level is about medium to a bit absurd because of the unnecessary reports
of the student, reporting their classmates doing other things, being inattentive, and doing
unnecessary just to catch the attention of other students.

7. If a learner is not following instruction or is off task, what does the resource teacher do?
Describe the behavior strategies used.
Answer:
The resource teacher focuses more on helping them accomplish the task even with
their worst behavior possible. However, if the pupil has not been following and already
distracting the attention of the others the teacher may somehow call them for their behavior.

8. What does the resource teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (Behavior strategies)
Answer:
The teacher insert a short lecture about values and reminds the students on what are
rules set in doing such activities.

REFLECT
1. Why do you need to enforce positive discipline?
Answer:
As a teacher our job is to prepare our pupils for the future and do our jobs
for their betterment. Good discipline is one of the key characteristics of a
successful person in a society, not only within the society but also within the four
corners of the classroom. We should mold them and give them to do positive
actions. If the students are always showing positive discipline, it would highly
boost the classroom learning efficiency. Positive discipline within the class
creates a smooth way of sailing ideas into knowledge making the teaching-
learning process runs smoothly.

ANALYZE
1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learners’ behavior?
Answer:
Being familiar with the student’s behavior and capability the teacher has
formulated a daily routine and a classroom seating plan or organization with the
aim to maximize the teaching-learning process. As a teacher you need to deliver
the best to make the students better.

2. What should the teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom
organization and routines? What theories and principles should you have in
mind?
Answer:
Beside from being a good a resource teacher, a teacher must also know
how to identify the students’ characteristics, capability and specially behavior.
The teacher should always keep in mind the theory of BEHAVIORIST for her to
set a more efficient room.

3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the

learners? Is motivating students? Why were they effective?
Answer:
During my observation I realized that the effective way to catch the
student’s attention is to have an enjoyable discussion and interactive activities.
Doing such things attracts the student’s attention by maximizing it the teacher
can have a smooth sailing class.

REFLECT
Reflect on the following and write your insights.
1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade year
level do you see yourself? What routines and procedures would you consider for
this level and why?
Answer:
I see myself teaching a grade 5 Mathematics class, I will start my class
with a prayer and then check the attendance. After doing so I would like to lay
down some stepping stones for a successful class by letting them arrange their
chairs and have them recall our class rules and then review the previous lesson.
I will ensure myself to use an interactive and attractive teaching aids to gather
the attention of the students, and maximize it to a smooth teaching-learning
process.

2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would you
choose these rules?
Answer:
a. Be on time – always be on time for it is a rule within the society
specially if you already working. This would also help them know the
importance of punctuality.
b. Keep Quiet – keep quiet at all time specially if you’re not ask or spoken
to.
c. Raise your hands – If you are seeking for attention, quietly raise your
hand and wait for the teacher to call you.
d. Respect other – do this at all times, for within the classroom you are all
the same.

3. Should learners be involved in making this class rules? Why?

Answer:
To encourage leadership development and to instill the value of
responsibility in their actions and behavior, students must be involved in the
creation of classroom rules. Additionally, it enables cooperation between
students and teachers in deciding on the regulations that must be established.
