Learning 8: Establishing My Own Classroom Routines and Procedures in a Face-

To-Face/Remote Learning

PARTICIPATE AND ASSIST

Complete the matrix for the routines that you can employ before, during, and after classes in the
classroom/remote learning to ensure order and discipline in your classes. List down the problems which
you have encountered while implementing these routines.

- There are only a few problems that I have observed during routine implementation in the
classroom. One is, students sometimes do not take them seriously. Probably because they’re so
used to doing it everyday that they become too comfortable with it, for example, leading a
prayer before the class starts. Not everyone speaks the “Our father” out loud. Some still are
holding their gadgets even when they’re standing up. Last one is that there are a few students
who still come in 5-10 minutes late. Even though our resource teacher has reprimanded them
about it, they seem to not put the reminder about coming early to school in their minds.

NOTICE

After doing your classroom routines and formulating your procedures, state what you noticed by
answering the following questions:

 How did you feel after employing your classroom routines and establishing your procedures
in the classroom/remote learning?
- I feel very fulfilled and satisfied. At first, I felt very nervous that I would not be able to properly
employ the routines properly, or worse, forget them. But I didn’t and the students responded
properly as well. I made them do the prayer, asked the secretary to check their attendance, and
did a “good morning” greeting routine.

 How did your students respond to your classroom routines and procedures?
- The students responded attentively. I asked the students who was in charge of the checking of
attendance, and they responded that it was their secretary, who started to check the
attendance right away. When I told them that we would start with the prayer, they immediately
stood up to do so. When I greeted them a “Good Morning”, they responded with the same
greeting.

 What was the feedback of your Resource Teacher on your classroom routines and
procedures?
- My resource teacher has listed some of my strengths and areas of improvement. As for the
areas of strength, my Resource Teacher wrote that me, as the teacher for the day, was able to
demonstrate the subject matter very well and that I showed mastery of the subject matter. As
for the areas of improvement, one comment was, “The teacher may walk around the room to
check if some students are still keeping up with the lesson” and “The teacher must always use
English as medium of instruction.”

 Was there a change in the classroom environment/teaching-learning process after you have
implemented your classroom routines and procedures?
- Not much really. The students were still the same as when I’ve observed them during class
hours. But there was a bit of enthusiasm from them especially when I started to play the music,
they were familiar with. There were screams from the girls and a unison recognition from the
boys.

 What was the feedback of your Resource Teacher on your classroom routines and
procedures?
- Ma’am Grace’s feedback was, “’The teacher demonstrates leadership ability and was able to
maintain discipline and control.”

ANALYZE

1. What factors/conditions prompted you to establish those classroom routines and

procedures?
- I’d say the very main factor why I made the routines for me during my implementation is to
maintain the control of the classroom, especially that I have an autistic student. As for the
procedures, I wanted my students to not feel like I would snap at them if they say the wrong
answers. I made my procedure a bit of chill and as much as possible, integrate pop culture
references so they would feel comfortable and would be able to confidently share their
answers, which they did.

2. Was there a marked improvement in classroom management after employing your

classroom routines?
- In my remarks, the teacher did not put any areas of improvement, only in the areas of strengths.

3. Did the teaching-learning process improve? Justify your answer.

- I would say yes. The students were able to perform my activity properly which is singing a song.
They were able to follow my instructions of only singing the first part of the song until the first
chorus. The class was enjoying their task because they can relate to their task which is to sing a
K-pop and J-pop song.
REFLECT
What insights have you gained while doing this learning episode?
- My biggest insights would be, a teacher needs to exude confidence at all times, to give authority
to a class atmosphere. Confidence connects to many things like your gesture, your voice, your
posture, your eye contact, and your engagement with the students. In this way, you can impart
your lesson effectively to them. It’s also good to also integrate pop culture references in
between discussions because it breaks the ice of gap between you and the students.

WRITE ACTION RESEARCH PROMPTS

OBSERVE

1. The problems/challenges I have encountered in my establishing my classroom

routines:
- There isn’t much problem with the students I am currently assisting to. They were very attentive
and respectful to my routines. Even my student who was autistic was behaving. Although at
times she stands up and looks at the music my phone I’m playing for the class, she can still be
appeased and she would sit down after a while. But if I were to dig into it, I would say the
consistency of the students to follow them.

REFLECT

2. I hope to achieve to address these problems and challenges by:

- By being firmer with my routines. I think because it’s still my first time so I have to not be too
much strict with the routines. But probably in the long run, when I keep on teaching, my firm
stand on following routines could slowly increase.

PLAN

3. Some strategies/ways which I can employ to improve my classroom routines are:

I only have a few in my mind since my students are properly following them. These
are:
- Be strict and firm when employing them
- Be very clear with them
ACT

4. (Based in my answers in nos. 1-3), the possible title of my action research on this
episode is:
- The title I have in mind is, “How to maintain students’ consistency in routinary
implementation”.

5. Why is it best to establish routines at the beginning of the class?

WORK ON MY ARTIFACTS

- Taken by my fellow student teacher. I was very nervous here. When I was doing my teaching
routine, and finally got the students to be comfortable with me, it felt fulfilling. Same as the
picture below.
