Module 1: The School as a
Learning Environment

What Will You Learn from This Module?

Effective teaching-learning is focused on the total development

of the learner. The school system had provided means of
ensuring that effective teaching will lead to quality output – the
holistic development of the learner. It is believed that the
school can be the best venue for the learner’s total development
as he spends most of his time in the confines of the classroom.

The school is tasked with the responsibility of developing the 4H’s of the learners:
The school as a learning environment can produce versatile, intelligent, creative, self-
reliant, God-loving, nationalistic and productive citizens of our country.

This module is composed of four activities:

Activity 1: The School

Facilities
Activity 2: The School Site
Activity 3: My Observation
Report
Activity 4: If I Will Be…..

After studying this module, you should be able to:

1. Determine an environment that provides social, psychological and physical
environment supportive of learning.
2. Describe the school environment.
3. Make an illustration of a learner-friendly school.

ACTIVITY 1: The School Facilities

Ask your critic teacher, what are the facilities available? List them
down.
1. Computer Laboratories
2. Auditorium
3. Clinic
4. Guidance Center
3. EDP Electronic Data Processing
4.Parking Area
5.Library
6. Robotics Room
7. Accounting/Cashier/Registrar
8.Canteen
9.Faculty
10.Kitchen

What other facilities are not available in the school?

List them down.

Based on my observations of all the amenities, The University of Cebu-Banilad-

College and SHS Building provides full facilities needed by teachers,
administrators, school staff, and students.
How did the school personnel manage the school activities without the above
mentioned facilities? What alternatives are they using?

 For me, they don't need to consider anything because the school has everything
that pupils, instructors, and other school workers might possibly require.
alternatives. Instead, they upgrade each facility annually for long-term use and
the benefit of new users. Students in future generations will benefit from the
above mentioned facilities.

ACTIVITY 2: The School Site

Draw the lay-out of the school site. Describe the location of the school. You
may be
guided by these questions:
1. Where is the school located?
 Yes
2. Is the school accessible to the students?
 Yes
3. Is the school free from distractions and health hazards?
 Yes
4. Are the buildings near each other?
 Yes
5. Are there provisions for playground?
 The school has restrictions and only nursery and elementary children
are permitted in the playground guidelines for entering the
playground. The appointed teacher was held to standards set by the
school. Who will make it easier for the students to get to the
playground
THE SCHOOL SITE
ACTIVITY 3: My Observation Report

Write your general impression of the school as a learning environment.

MY OBSERVATION REPORT

In my view, a teacher's diverse teaching strategies can

improve the learning environment at a school. They have
the power. Each of these can aid in enhancing the
classroom setting and helping students learn more
efficiently. with little disruptions. Performance and effective
learning are both improved by the setting, a variety of
instructional modes, and teaching styles
ACTIVITY 4: If I Will Be…

Reflect on these questions…….

1. If you will be given a chance to be the principal of the school you are
observing, what improvements would you propose to have a school campus
that is conducive to learning?

If I will be the principal of the school, I will do these following things in order to have a
school campus conducive to learning

Create a classroom that encourages interaction

 Teachers can come out with thought-provoking topics that require the
students to think and share their opinions with no prejudice. Having
discussions and even debates promotes creativity and critical thinking,
which are important life skills that students should inculcate while they are
still in school. Planned interaction also gives quieter students the
opportunity to express themselves where they would normally not speak up.
 I desire to have a room full of teachers who are carrying out their duties as
principals. I'm looking for educators that are completely dedicated to being
top-notch educators in every manner. I want teachers who are not just
skilled at what they do but also compassionate in order to be able to ensure
that every child succeeds.
willing to go beyond the basic requirements. Simply put, being surrounded
by excellent teachers improves your appearance, makes your work easier,
and gives you more time to handle other responsibilities.
elements of your position.

Address Student Needs

 As a principal, remember that students, like adults, have not only physical needs
but also important psychological needs for security and order, love and belonging,
personal power and competence, freedom and novelty, and fun. Students are driven
to meet all of these needs all the time, not just two or three of them. When teachers
intentionally address these needs in the classroom, students are happier to be there,
behavior incidents occur far less frequently, and student engagement and learning
increases.
Celebrate Success

 When students receive positive feedback for something that they have done, it is
essentially a signal to their brain saying 'do it again'. Celebrating success is an
essential element of every classroom. It is the driver behind student motivation,
self-esteem, and creating a positive classroom culture.

Communicate Directly
 Successful school leaders put the needs of their students first. They never stray
from the path. The goal of every expectation and endeavor is to make sure that
every child attends a better school. Both separately and all at once. Our primary
responsibilities are to make sure that pupils are safe, healthy, and progressing
academically. Every decision must take into account how it may impact a
particular student or class of students. We are available to assist, direct, correct,
and instruct each and every student. As a principle, I have to keep in mind that
the kids should always come first.
2. If you will have your own classroom, what would you do to make your room more
conducive to learning?

If I will have my own classroom, I will do these following things in order to

have a school campus conducive to learning:

Make the best out of your classroom space

 Students spend a significant amount of their time in school, with the majority of
this time being in the classroom. Therefore, the layout and arrangement of the
classroom should be one that encourages students to be productive. Instead of
sticking to the typical classroom arrangement that we are so accustomed to, opt
to have different sections of the room with each serving a specific purpose.

Create a classroom that encourages interaction

 Teachers can come out with thought-provoking topics that require the students to think
and share their opinions with no prejudice. Having discussions and even debates
promotes creativity and critical thinking, which are important life skills that students
should inculcate while they are still in school. Planned interaction also gives quieter
students the opportunity to express themselves where they would normally not speak up

Have an Awards Section

 Students learn best when they are motivated and a great way to keep them
driven is by rewarding achievements. Oftentimes, it is only the high
achievers that win most school-based awards and this can cause weaker
students to feel left out and unmotivated. Therefore, having a special awards
program for your own classroom is a great way to encourage the weaker
students and make them feel appreciated as well.
