Part II: Reflection

CANDIDATE REFLECTIONS:
(Minimum of 3-4 sentences per question)

1. Briefly describe the field experience. What did you learn about technology facilitation and
leadership from completing this field experience?

The process of completing this Tech Planning project was most challenging for me. I don’t
envision my self being in a leadership position. One of the first things I discovered is that my
school district is way ahead of others when it comes to implementation of technology. It was hard
to talk with some about what we need or should be doing going forward as we have 1:1 and are in
the midst of issued all new 1:1 device. We were very well experienced with all forms of
technology and when the pandemic started, we were quite well experienced and ready to meet the
needs of teaching remotely. While completing the components of the tech planning project, I
learned a great deal about assessing our school’s current reality and using that this to develop a
plan for improvement. After my initial discussions with colleagues, one thing I have always
questioned is the effective use of technology across the school from one teacher to the next. I
learned that not many teachers know what the ISTE or any other technology standards were. We
are not required to meet or utilize any of them in our instruction. We all have free range to use the
Chromebook in our class lessons. As I worked through the SWOT analysis, I really gained a
deeper understanding of what the ISTE Essential Conditions were. Many of these standards are
not mentioned in our districts strategic plan. The shared vision paper was my evaluation of my
schools current standing with technology and what I think needs to be established with regarding
effective use since technology has already been integrated into our school system.

2. How did this learning relate to the knowledge (what must you know), skills (what must you
be able to do) and dispositions (attitudes, beliefs, enthusiasm) required of a technology
facilitator or technology leader? (Refer to the standards you selected in Part I. Use the
language of the PSC standards in your answer and reflect on all 3—knowledge, skills, and
dispositions.)
Knowledge – Having an understanding of a school’s current reality and becoming familiar with
the School Improvement Plan (SIP) is necessary to be able to assess what the tech needs are for
the school. I need to know about the ISTE Essential Conditions so to accurately analyses the
school’s status with tech integration and to apply this to development of goals needed to create an
action plan. As a technology leader, you must be aware of the school’s goals to help
the school effectively integrate technology.
Skills – A technology coach needs to be familiar with these Essential conditions so to be able to
identify the current status of tech integrations and analyze the tech plan so to create a plan of
action for future or continued use of technology. A tech coach needs communication and
collaboration skills to develop a shared vision that is agreeable for everybody and to develop on
actin plan aligned with desired goals.
Dispositions – With the shared vision, an instructional coach needs to apply what they learn about
the strengths and weaknesses of a school’s use of technology so to create a vision that all can be
agreed upon by all stakeholders. From this all need to be included in the development of an action
plan that is achievable by all involved with improving technology use in the school. The plan will
focus on many aspects including making sure all who need professional development to make
necessary changes to their pedagogy is included in the planning. Part of the process needs to
address digital equity not just with distribution of devices but assurance need to be included to
make sure all students, regardless of gender, race and socioeconomic status are included within the
action plan for continued integration of new and improved instructional technology.

3. Describe how this field experience impacted school improvement, faculty development or
student learning at your school. How can the impact be assessed?

This was a challenging process. I was certainly unaware of my school’s technology status except
that all students have devices. I think that by sharing my technology vision and plan with others at
my school we can implement this plan, as effective use of technology is to me one of the biggest
issues my school lacks direction on. The ultimate basis for the action plan I developed is for the
implementation of professional development that includes making teachers aware of technology
standards like ISTE and promote awareness of effective use of technology in the classroom.
There are no consistencies with tech use among teachers. Not a single teacher I spoke with knew
what technology standards are. My hope is to at least bring about awareness and be a voice for
change. By implementing this shared vision and action plan, we would really see some academic
improvements but most importantly, we will see teachers creating lessons that student centered
and truly will prepare students for a success in a tech infused future in the 21st century.
