PAHE e-portfolio

Task 1-Intinial observation and analysis

Shooting is one of the most basic, known yet important aspect of basketball and it is also a
clear necessity and without it you cannot even think of playing at high levels. Due to this the
main object of my e-portfolio is improving shooting and accuracy of the primary hand of my
client in basketball. The reason for the chosen aspect of the game is that shooting is the main
output of points and progress in a basketball game. It is a necessity to know, and beginners
must learn it in the very biggening at all costs. Shooting is the primary way of gaining points
and being productive for your team. Driving in for lay ups and assisting other players will not
work out against tall and quick opponents so learning and mastering this aspect of the game
will game you an upper hand. If you want to move up the ladders and become more
competitive in the game, the first stat they will judge you with is the number of points you
score in the game and the best way to ace this stat is by becoming the master of the art of
shooting.
History of basketball
The history of this sport is very old, and the game has evolved multiple times. Basketball
began in 1891 in the US state of Massachusetts. It was started by a Canadian PE teacher. The
sport later went on to become very popular in the future. The most popular basketball league
is NBA which started in the year 1947. Since then, the sport has grown and developed to
become one of the most popular sports across the world. This have been multiple rule and
play style changes as new players have come and revolutionised the game. Many of the
countries across the world have developed their own leagues and tournaments with slightly
different rules yet the core values of the sport remain the same.
Global context- Globalisation and sustainability
Key concept- Relationship
Related concept- Perspective
Through my topic I will have to construct and develop a special type of relationship with the
sport and my client in order to succeed in the goal of helping my client improve. I will also
have to consider all the various perspectives while planning for the drills and training
methods for my client. Will need to think like a teacher, student, and an opponent in the
game. Through this project I will ensure that my client who is very new and rookie to the
sport can sustain there for a longer period of time and grow his level of gameplay and
productivity.
Client coach interview
To get this perspective from my client and to gain more knowledge about his skill level,
game sense and dedication to the sport I have conducted an interview of my client where I
ask basic and advance questions related to the topic.

The provided interview was really a necessity for me to get to know all the aspects about the
gameplay and sporting life of my client. I think my client has properly understood all my
questions and identified all his pros, cons, and habits. I have understood that my client prefers
to play guard position who is good at defensive areas of the game. But the skill he lacks is
shooting with proper accuracy and power. He isn’t that good at placing the ball in the rim and
scoring over defenders. These skills are vital for any guard in a match situation as they are the
primary method for scoring. It is important that he learns and improvises on them. His height
is 5 feet’11 inches which is par average in India but good enough to play the guard position.
My client doesn’t have any training or diet plan that can help him improve his game. This lets
me know what actions I will have to take to get my client to a higher level at the skill. Any
small level training or practice session will not really make a significant impact on the client
that is why my client need special training on the skill related aspect of shooting.

Goals
After gathering these valuable pieces of information from my client I think I must set prior
expectations and goal for the result of my client’s improvements. I must keep in mind that
these must be SMART as this will increase the value of these goal. I shouldn’t make it
impossible for my client to achieve but shouldn’t make it too easy either.
Putting the intensity and efficiency of the sessions, by the end of the training session after 8
weeks my client should be able to-
-Improve in short range shooting accuracy and convert 90 % of his shots after the completion
of the training session.
-Improve in mid-range shooting and placement to convert 40% of his mid-range shots after
the completion of the training session.
-Improve long range shooting and power by 100% which will be demonstrating respectable
improvement and allowing him to convert at least 10% of his 3-point shots attempted.
This would be achieved by working on the health-related factors of upper body muscular
strength, while maintaining a consistent physical component of balance which has
unprecedented importance in the skill of shooting accuracy.

Client health profile

My client is a 15-year-old athlete who is a professional football player and has played
football for the school under 16 team. He is new to basketball and wants to master shooting
first giving lesser priority to other aspects and skills of the game because he believes shooting
is the most necessary to learn. He stands at 5feet’10inch and weighs around 70 Kg’s which is
ideal for his age as his body mass index rounds up to 22 which is normal weight. My client
believes that he has a lot of leg strength and power but lacks the same for his arm and
forearm. This could be a factor that could possibly drag his shooting skills down, so I need to
work on this by training his biceps, triceps, shoulders and forearms through several exercises
and drills. My client does not have any high level or chronic diseases which means he is
healthy enough to perform all the drills which are expected out of him. My client isn’t
suffering with any ongoing muscular or skeletal injury either which means I am not restricted
on putting any workout or drills which will be intense on his body. Overall, my client has a
perfect weight for his height and does not have any health issue making him 100% healthy
and eligible for the training and fitness plan I have for him.
Initial benchmark
It is important to conduct the fitness test for my client keeping the health-related component
of upper body strength in mind. I do not expect my client to meet the normal sore in the
fitness drills for his age as I have learnt from the interview that he lacks arm strength.
Furthermore, I have predicted the score my client could achieve keeping his weakness in
mind. I have only laid my focus on the strength of my clients Biceps, forearms and shoulders
which are some of the key factors in the sport of basketball when it comes down to shooting
the ball.
Looking at the figure provided in the
table, we can clearly see that my client
has only been successful in
maintaining a below average score for
biceps and triceps strength and he has
only achieved an average score for
shoulder strengths which is distant
from the norm scores of the tests.
These scores showcase that my client
is nowhere near the required upper body strength capacity to become a good or even a decent
shooter. I will need to pay a lot of focus on this fitness area in order to get my client to the
intended levels of the game. The aspect of balance was also assessed in this test through the
one legged stance dribble where the client had to get hold of his left leg and dribble the ball
with his right hand simultaneously. My client completely underperformed and did not meet
the expected score.
While conducting these fitness tests I have also made a note of the mistakes my client was
making while performing these exercises due to which he was able to completely make use of
and enhance his strength. His mistakes came from the positioning he was taking while doing
the push ups, pull ups and while lifting the weights which will require improvement.
While performing the pull ups, my client was clearly not accurate as he was coming in at a
slant position and wasn’t completely pulling his body weight
up.
My client was also inaccurate with the push ups as he wasn’t
completely taking his upper body downwards and he was
taking his elbows to the side while pushing himself which is a
wrong way of performing it.

It is a necessity for me to know the initial skill level of my client as I need to see where he
exactly stands with his shot power and accuracy while shooting the ball as this is the primary
skill related factor that my client is struggling with. I am conducting shooting test on the basis
of short range, medium range and long range (3 pointer). As a coach I have a predicted norm
score for the provided test drills which are specific to the age group of the client. Given that
my client is a beginner, I have also predicted certain accuracy I expect him to achieve in the
initial benchmark test.

It is evident that my client lacks the technique, mechanics, and body positioning for simply
shooting the ball. His recorded scores are far below average and need a lot of improvement.
The drills conducted in this case were testing his overall
shooting accuracy in 3 three ranges (short, mid, long)
while testing his shot power simultaneously. The 5p
shooting drill was testing my client’s shooting accuracy
in the mid-range from the 5 primary shooting angles in
the game. The client is asked to take 5 shots from each of the angles and based on the
outcome their accuracy is judged.
The client was also asked to take close range shots with 1 ball and without any specific angle
and the client wasn’t required to jump for these. To assess my clients long range accuracy
and shot power I demanded my client to shoot from behind the 3-point arc; the expectations
for these are always kept low due to the high skill level that is required to shoot 3 pointers as
even professional players struggle to achieve 25% accuracy.
While shooting the ball for these drills my client was
maintaining a consistent shooting stance which wasn’t
100% accurate. The client was in the 3-point stance from
which you can pass, shoot or dribble but his hand
placement and release technique was wrong as his power
hand wasn’t placed on the centre of the ball and he was
releasing his elbows outwards while shooting, instead of
this the client is supposed to have a elbow release facing
his stomach area.
Stance is the most important thing in basketball when it
comes to shooting and dribbling, therefore I will ensure
that I channel a lot of time and efforts in order to get my client into a perfect shooting stance
which will drastically help my client improve at shooting.

Task 2- Performance development plan

Benchmark of my client
All together my client lacks knowledge of the game, decision making, shooting technique,
and shooting stance. My client significantly lacks upper body muscular strength in key areas
such as bicep, triceps, forearms, and shoulders. This hindering the overall power and
accuracy of shots my client is taking due to which needs to work with a lot of intensity on his
upper body strength . Another error my client made in the benchmark testing is the technique
and stance that is required for shooting the ball efficiently and accurately.
Physical and health test
My client has been assed physically and health wise through multiple drills and exercises
assessing my client on the criteria of repetitions performed or shots made, however an in-
depth assessment physically and health wise for my client is must.
Push-up Test (Health)
My client lacks yet requires respectable amount of strength in multiple factions of his upper
body which are: Bicep, triceps, forearms, and shoulders. Push up is somethings which
requires you to poses physical capabilities in majority of these upper body muscles. Push ups
also test us on the overall balance we poses which is very relevant to my clients goal of
shooting, due to which I have decided to go with the push up test.
As we can see in the image on the left-hand side, push up is
a basic exercise which requires you to simply go into a
prone position and lowering their upper body
and pushing it back up again into the initial
position. Ensuring the alignment of your upper body and
keeping your back straight is significantly important.
Keeping my clients age and capabilities in mind I have made a performance table for this
push-up test:

Single Legged stance balance test (Physical)

Balance of body while shooting the ball is a key aspect any professional would train
themselves for shooting as in complicated match situations we would need to shoot the ball
while being contested by the opponent defender. Succeeding in this requires a balanced body
stance while being in motion and releasing the ball with the perfect follow through.
For this the single legged stance which is assed by recording the time one takes to loose the
body equilibrium.
