Heat

Transfer
Science P5
What is heat?
Heat is a form of energy that is transferred from a
hotter object to a colder object
When something is hot or burning, there is heat.
We feel warm because heat is transferred from a hot object or a burning
material to our body.
What is Temperature?
Temperature is a how hot or cold the object is
A hot object have a high temperature,
A cold object have a low temperature

To measure
temperature we useuse
Thermometer
The Effects of Heat
Transfer on Objects
Change in Temperature
Transfer of heat between two objects causing
the temperature of the object change
● Hotter object will lose
heat and decrease in
temperature
● Colder object will gain
heat and increase in
temperature
● The transfer of heat
continue until both
objects reach the same
temperature

Conduction
The transfer of heat between object that are in
contact

When we heat an object, the particle that closest to the source of heat will
vibrates and it will collide with the neighboring particles and cause it to
vibrates also. This happen continuously until all the particles vibrates and
heat spread out evenly
Conduction
The transfer of heat between object that are in
contact Examples:

Heat travels from hot coffee to Heat travels from electric Heat travels from
spoon and cup stove to pan candle to spoon
Conductor of heat

cooking utensils that prevent heat

Example: Examples:
Metal Wood
Glass Plastic
ceramic Rubber
Daily Examples:

Made of wood, so heat

cannot transferred so we
won’t get hand burned
Made of metal, so heat
can transferred easily
so clothes can heat up

Convection
The transfer of heat by the movement of liquids
and gas

When we heat a fluid ( liquid or moving gas), the particle that closest to the source of heat will vibrates
and it will become less dense (lighter) and it will comes to the surface pushing down the cool particles.
The cool particles will then heat up also and becoming less dense. The cycle, we called it convection
current, will continue until all the particles vibrates and heat spread out evenly.
Convection
The transfer of heat by the movement of liquids
and gas Example
s:

Boiling water Food steamer

Radiation
The transfer of heat directly from one object to
another with or without any material between
them Examples:

Heat from the camp fire Heat from the sun
