Proof-reading

Dear Miss Mak,

I’m concerned about my little brother, Alex Wong, who is in your class. A

His English is quite weak and he doesn’t seem to be very interesting in B

taking part in English class at all. I have just being read about a new C

method of teaching English has proven so successful that the D

Education Department has been urged to give it a trail between primary 1

schools. I hope you won’t mind if I share what I had read with you. 2

Between November and March, Dr Poon, an assistance professor from 3

the Baptist University, studied the impact of new method in a Primary 4

Four class at Pak Oi Hospital School. She was found significant 5

improvement in the students’ listening skills and willing to learn. The 6

progress made was great when compared with those of a control group. 7

Apparently, the method has been widely adopted in overseas. It 8

involves listening to stories and familiarising students with vocabularies 9

and context of the stories beforehand. Students also take part activities 10

Such as group discussion and presentation after listening the story. Dr 11

Poon joins speaking with listening skills by having students to talk about 12

the story after listening and come up different endings for the story. 13

I wish that I had had this kind of lesson when I was in primary school. 14
Sometimes, listening and speaking skills are neglectful in English 15

teaching at the primary level and the common method which used in 16

Schools can be mechanical and bored. I hope that you will consider 17

Using this method when planning your English class for the coming term. 18

Yours sincerely,

Chris Wong
