Revolutionising Forex Purchase

If you have ever tried to purchase foreign currencies, you will no doubt have experienced some of the hassle that comes with currency fluctuation –
especially in today’s somewhat turbulent times.

The reality is that fluctuations in exchange rates can be a true menace, whether you’re in need of forex for a holiday abroad or for professional
investment efforts. The exchange rate of any given currency changes often and this volatility can impact your budget and your patience. With
modern technology making almost every other process simpler, better and even faster, how is the process of purchasing forex keeping up, and do
we still need to queue at the bank to make it happen?

Thankfully, no. Mobile apps from financial services providers are now almost commonplace, and some of these boast functionalities that not
only make forex purchase and transactions simple, but they are even enjoyable. The hassle factor has been fast removed, and the frustrations of
currency fluctuations well taken care of.

Shyft, Stanbic Bank’s newly introduced Forex App, is one such example, Arno von Helden, Co-Founder of Shyft, notes that there are now ways to
protect yourself against currency fluctuations when purchasing and storing forex, allowing one to easily track exchange rates and to make a buy
when the rate hits a level at which they are comfortable with.

The Shyft Forex platform allows users to buy, send, store, and spend forex. First launched in South Africa in 2017, the app has seen significant
uptake – acquiring over 100 000 users to date and a very strong reception. “One of the biggest benefits of the app is the ability to purchase a
currency in the Shyft wallet when the exchange rate is favourable,” Von Helden says. “Users can then store that currency in the Shyft digital wallet or
transfer the funds to a virtual card at the rate at which it was purchased initially.”

With the means to purchase one’s currency of choice at a favourable rate and park it at that rate, Shyft users are then protected from any
fluctuations that may occur thereafter. Said Stanbic Bank Botswana Head of Global Markets, Lebea Sephuma, “The technology is not only
revolutionary, but relevant. Taking the hassle out of forex transactions is what so many have been asking for, and now it is here. On top of this, there
is an element of education and empowerment, as Shyft allows users to do so much more.”

Sephuma continues, “If you are travelling abroad for business or pleasure, or buying something from overseas, you want to make purchases in the
currency of that country, because making payment in a currency that differs from your account’s base currency (Botswana Pula, for example),
attracts additional fees such as forex spreads or admin fees. With Shyft, one need not worry about this, or about whether your card is accepted
abroad (as not all debit cards may be, for instance). Moreover, if the Pula happens to depreciate, you will then be paying more for your purchases,
and it becomes easy to lose track of what everything ends up costing. We have removed the frustrations that come with this entirely.”

Now, those who travel abroad or make international payments regularly can choose to use a Shyft virtual or physical card. Users can create virtual
cards in up to 4 currencies that are linked to their digital wallets. The physical card is multi-currency, meaning that one can load US Dollars (USD),
British Pounds (GBP), Euros (EUR), and Australian Dollars (AUD) simultaneously, for instance.

“Let’s assume you are heading to Europe in the next month or so. As a Shyft user, you can purchase those euros ahead of time at a favourable
exchange rate, hold them at that rate and then spend them while abroad using your virtual or physical Shyft card. This means that you can enjoy
your travels without having to worry about movements in the Pula and the fluctuating cost of your purchases while abroad. No frustration, and,
instead, boundless convenience, functionality and peace of mind around security and usage,” Sephuma shares.

Batswana can also protect themselves from fees associated with purchases on online sites where products are priced in USD or EUR, for example,
by using a Shyft virtual card set up for that specific currency and purchase. This also makes online shopping safer as one’s main account details are
hidden when using a virtual card.

It is no wonder that Shyft has already seen such acclaimed reception in South Africa, as well as several prestigious awards it has secured. The app
was recognised as the MTN Business App of the Year overall winner and top app in the financial services category in 2017 and in 2021.

Now, as Shyft becomes available in Botswana, it is clear that the possibilities are near infinite. For more information, call +267 361 8024 or email

about me; it is all about the people. It is our
responsibility to drive conversations, tell
brand stories and carry the customer along
with us. It is up to us to re-define and re-

work for, which is a double-edged sword. It
is a strength as it allows us to do our work
passionately, but it can also be a weakness if
we allow our love for the brand to place our
needs first.
It is up to us to change the narrative of
being perceived as money spenders to value

would be if the polluter pays principle had been universally

not organised by developing countries who have become
victims of a consumerist society that was not of their do-

society only too anxious to be part of that society.
That loss and damage, adaptation funding and compen-

it is important to recognise that for the last 30 years, half of
all GHG emissions is from transition and developing coun-
tries, like China and India. Just as charity should start at
home, so should climate justice. If Nigeria aimed to phase
out oil, replace it with wind and solar and export green en-

management practices, then they would be very deserving
of loss and damage compensation.

A significant example of support is an $8.5 billion pro-

South Africa is actively implementing its revised NDC and

Extreme weather
The United Nations defines climate change as long-term shifts in
temperatures and weather patterns. However, it is important to note
that climate change involves not only rising temperatures but also
other extreme weather events, rising sea levels, shifting wildlife pop-
ulations and habitats, and a range of other impacts. These shifts may
be natural, but since the 1800s, human activities have been the main
driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels
like coal, oil and gas, which produces heat-trapping gases.
Although not surprising, considering the number of extreme weath-
er events being recorded across the world, it is concerning that the
United Nations has noted that the world is now warming faster than
at any point in recorded history.
