Chapter 1

Introduction

Technological development, automation, and digitalization are becoming more

widespread in all areas of activity, causing some areas of the population to have lost their jobs

recently, causing great concerns among people who often ask: Will a computer or a robot

replace humans for many jobs? Will digitalization decrease vacancies? Will unemployment

increase? Will the employment rate decrease?

Given that the indicators that influence employment rate reflect the ability of the

economy to generate opportunities and employment solutions for the population, they must be

the goal of government or private policies, to influence the economic development of countries

or regions under sustainability principles. This thus meets the requirements of sustainable

development as formulated worldwide, in order to ensure a better employment rate, as well as a

higher standard of living.

Even if the idea of creating more jobs with the expansion of digitalization seems to be

conflicting, shows that digital literacy and e-skills are now mandatory for the workforce. These

requirements, together with additional investments in high-speed Internet, are priorities of the

Agenda 2020 as they have positive effects on employment rate. Therefore, government

policies, and those of local, zonal, or sectoral administrations, are highly important in dealing

with these very sensitive issues for the population.

E-commerce is one of businesses among our town Ibaan, Batangas, its strong growth

over the past decade being accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, due to the

health and economic crises in the past two years, the issue of employment rate, the
opportunities of employment under such circumstances, along with the survival of businesses

have become supplementary pressing matters in the Philippines. E-commerce, together with its

collateral activities (online payment platforms, freight transport-courier, related software

products, IoT tools that require implementation and maintenance, including manufacturing)

have largely protected savings, jobs, and the employment rate. As such, cloud computing, big

data, and e-commerce remain major priorities aimed to spur progress within industries, as well

as to increase the demand for innovative jobs expertise. The influence of e-commerce is

anticipated to generate jobs directly and indirectly, and to disregard jobs that no longer require

social involvement. Indirect job conception will ensue through augmented demand and

efficiency. Thus, the impact of e-commerce on employment is imperative and exponential.

The aim of this research is to know the impact of online selling to the employment rate

of the people in Ibaan, Batangas. Hence, another purpose of our research is to explore the

clusters of nations with reference to electronic commerce adoption and employment rate

dynamics. For instance, employed hierarchical cluster analysis to examine whether there are

substantial variations between European states concerning e-commerce practices, but

employment rate was not considered. Hence, our analysis provides fresh evidence in this

regard. The loss of jobs in many sectors of the economy in all European Union countries

caused by the pandemic in the last two years and concerns in populations to keep or find a job,

explains better or justifies our objective to identify and study the factors that influence the

employment rate of the population directly. As well, it is frequently claimed that one of the

major reasons of regional unemployment gaps is the location of falling or rising activities in

specific areas. This study is important because it may be a tool for understanding the factors

affecting employment rate.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND SYNTHESIS

This chapter presents the conceptual and research literature which the

researchers have pursued to shed light on the topic under study and it is conducted by local and

foreign authors closely related to the present study they formed and provided information that

helpful the researches to conceptualize the framework necessary in this study.

Foreign Literature

According to Aldin et.al, (2014), the web has become an opportunity for the marketers

to add value to products and services. The phenomenal growth and rising of the popularity of

the internet and the World Wide Web has become a key to attract more consumers and

businesses to engage the benefits of Electronic Commerce (Ecommerce). This event has

transformed the traditional commerce and enhanced sales and exchanges of merchandise and

information. It is not just considered as a single entity of technology but both technologies

where applications, processes, business strategies are necessary to do business electronically.

According to Brigita Go (2012), running an online business is much better than opening

a store. Selling online is indeed one of the great ways to make profits online. In fact, it is also a

great way to widen your target market and grow your business fast as well. It is manageable

and it will also not affect your studies while you are doing online selling.

Ian Ross Hollander (2012), stated that there are three online marketing trends every

successful entrepreneur must adopt: communities are critical, dynamic browsing environments

and control what you create.

Carolyn Anderson (2012) stated that "by putting your business online, you are also

widening your reach worldwide". It is important to check out some online selling tips that may

help make selling successful. As more and more business takes the ecommerce journey to

charm customers, it is enhancing more and more necessary to build effective ecommerce

marketing ideas. According to Sunny (2012) the primary reasons for marketing your

ecommerce business online is to remain fasten.

Local Literature

In the Philippines, e-commerce is mostly being implemented by major retailers and

multinational corporations for bank to bank exchange. A number of business-to-consumer

transactions have emerged through the years such as auctions, online shopping, and online

banking. (Lacson, Pasadilla, 2006).

Philippine firms have yet to fully tap the potentials of e-commerce that will help them

to compete in domestic and global markets. In the process of preparing themselves to conduct

e-commerce, these firms will be changing the way they do business. These changes are

expected to have an impact on the welfare of Philippine workers. Most efforts to measure the

economic effects of e-commerce – including those on workers’ welfare have focused on the

U.S. and Europe, who are considered be the leaders in e-commerce. (Roberto, 2002) In general,

discusses the changes in the nature of work from the front to back office is likely within the

sectors performing services employment demand for these industries, they may be focused

away from agents and blue collared workers, toward higher management and executive staff.
According to Desiderio (2012) businesses urged to use Internet to push product. It

shows that businesses are advised to use the Internet for promoting their products and services

as more consumers are going online to research before making purchases. Companies should

consider using online advertisements for the products and services they offer as more and more

people are using the Internet to research goods they plan to buy before making the purchase.

Foreign Studies

E-commerce has become a standard method of providing distributed information to

many different platforms. It is being implemented by a growing number of companies to be

more competitive in corporate world. All companies need to make a step forward towards a

new technology. To compete with the global market, e-commerce was a good answer (Lanvin

and Maggargul,2006)

With the development of Internet, e-commerce becomes a common practice in foreign

trade and penetrates into every aspect of international trade. Xia (2006) stated that e-commerce

application in foreign trade enterprise are analyzed, the potential application that e-commerce is

superior to traditional trade is expounded, active reactions are suggested be taken, the

promotive function of e-commerce application should be exerted by government, the

enhancement of e-commerce competence, the perfection of the service role as intermediary

platform, the study of joint effort of all parties for a promising e-commerce application

environment.

According to Michael Braganza (2007), ecommerce is the latest mantra in increasing

your sales. This is because instead of selling your goods and services through a local store, you

can sell online and gain a greater customer base. Apart from providing shipping services, you
will need an online ecommerce merchant account to accept credit card payments to make your

venture a success.

Based on the study of Sophie Walton (2012), online bargain hunting has prepared my

time much easier and less chaotic. She garages online for birthday presents, textbooks, stuff,

domiciliary supplies and occasionally even for foodstuffs. However, spending for clothing

online has one major problem --females' sizes are not standard. Clothing producers tell females

they have standard sizes but females know this is as false as one size fits all. She has really

sobbed in a dressing area since she had to buy a pair of pants two sizes larger because they

were cut so small. She does not let this halt me from ordering dress from online retailers

because it saves time and money by shopping online. Though, she has learned a few tricks for

shopping online for outfits that she wants to share with us.

Local Studies

A study from Katrina Tan (2007), which stands for Start your Online Business Now, is

a company whose business is to help other people start their own businesses. It recently

launched the Philippines' first online marketplace for goods and services, bringing together

buyers and sellers through an online Web portal that serves as a complete virtual office.

Developing a technology for the company’s/countries productivity should be the main

concern of the developer. As stated, the state shall give priority to research and development,

invention, innovation, and their utilization and to science and technology education, training,

and services. It shall support indigenous, appropriate, and self-reliant scientific and

technological capabilities, and their application to the country`s productive systems and

national life. (Article XIV Section 10, Science and Technology, 1986)
According to George as Online Marketing, (2010) there are so many benefits of online

advertisement of a product. One is, you have wide coverage makes your business to reach more

audiences. Second is, it is more affordable in online advertisement than other traditional

advertising cost. Third is, easy to track and measure conversation this makes online advertising

more ahead than traditional method of advertising.
