OGL 345: Organizational Ethics

This class helped me learn more about the business side of Organizational Leadership.

This was the second class I have taken where we annotate in the online textbook. I think annotat-

ing in the Fryer Textbook helps me to get more involved in the readings and helps retain more

information. The only thing about the scoring, I liked how in my other class you could see your

score right there and then. In this class I had to wait to see my textbook activity scores. I really

enjoyed reading chapter 5 in the textbook where I learned about Flourishing and Fulfillment in

business, that was my favorite chapter. It was neat to take a deeper look into creating a business

and see how a business can just be fulfilled if the interest is only making money, but your busi-

ness will flourish and be fulfilled if your business is connected to the community surrounding it.

This is also important because a business who’s only goal is to make money, most likely won’t

last since they are not interested in being a part of the community, more than likely they will be

phased out. The companies that are interested in being a part of the community are the ones that

last. I enjoyed reading about “reason” and humans being able to think rationally about whether

they should do something or not. What I find so neat about these classes, is the fact that some of

these things may seem like “common sense” knowledge, but when you learn about it, you get a

different perspective. This was also the second class that I have used The Planet Jockey Moral

Mindfield simulation. I do not like the simulation personally and found some of the questions

confusing. It was helpful doing the Moral Minefield papers, I could connect different scenarios

to the Fryer textbook and brainstorm how I can relate this to my real-world work experiences.

I have noticed a few changes to my leadership style throughout this semester. I am more

self-aware about my Ethical relativism, when situations arise, I am second guessing my assump-
tions about what is right and what is wrong that was shaped by my life experiences and social in-

fluences. I am also trying to think more like a consequentialism. Before learning more about this

I thought I was thinking about what course of action would bring out the best consequences. Re-

flecting on previous life experiences, I realized I was not effectively doing that. I am a very reac-

tionary person and that has caused some decisions I’ve made to not end the way I wanted. I am

working on slowing down and weighing up all the different courses of action. I don’t know why

I feel the need to make decisions so quick. Reading about Utilitarianism has also helped me to

realize I need to pay more attention to my decisions and make sure they are an ethically charged

decision which maximizes the good. I have always had the mindset that I am not perfect and

there is always room for improvement I will never stop trying to develop my myself. I am always

looking for different things to work on and continuing my own personal development. Learning

about discourse ethics will help me in my job today, I will welcome open communication and be

willing to hear other viewpoints. In doing this, we will make informed decisions that end in con-

sensus. This also allows for exploring new ideas rather than just picking an option off a menu. I

have made folders on my computer to house assignments for each of my classes, I will reflect on

my notes to continue helping me on my development and I will also continue to take leadership

surveys to help pinpoint different areas I need to focus on. I enjoyed this class and thought it was

set up great for learning, I am not sure what leadership position I will pursue yet, but I do know

that I will be an ethical leader because I truly care about the employees, communities, and envi-

ronment businesses effect.
