PCA-Human Resource Frame Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:

1. Describe the human resource frame

2. Apply the human resource frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

As stated in module one, my situation chosen for this assignment was the transition from
a contracted technical writer, to an in house colleague as a production operator at a
Pfizer. While the process for hiring usually takes 8-10 weeks, a new diversity and inclu-
sion initiative, coupled with a lack of substantial applicant flow meant that for me, the
process took over 9 months.

2) Describe how the human resources of the organization influenced the situation.

The human resources played a big role in lengthening the timeline for my hiring process,
due to the fact that HR was off site. The HR department was located in a different state
and the main form of communication was through email. I reached out a few times to the
recruiter after my interview and she kept saying that she was waiting on the hiring man-
ager for feedback. I found this interesting, because I currently worked under the hiring
manager, Mike, who communicated to me that he was waiting on HR to move forward
with my hiring. The HR recruiter was responsible for the sourcing of employees for mul-
tiple sites, and the site I was applying to was a small site and not a priority.

I felt like I wasn’t a priority as a candidate. On multiple occasions I second-guessed what

Mike was telling me. I had trouble reconciling his expressed desire to hire me, when the
necessary HR steps to do so made it such a drawn out process. I had never gone through a
hiring process that took this long. The new diversity and inclusion initiative had a lot to
do with the HR influence in the situation. Three diverse candidates had to be interviewed
for a role within Pfizer. Mike and the HR team had trouble finding diverse candidate's to
interview and re-posted the position multiple times in pursuit of enough candidates as the

1
posting would expire after a set time without being filled. That meant that as a potential
candidate, I had to wait on other people to be interviewed before receiving an offer. I
guess the one thing I should be thankful for is that I did not have to interview every time
they re-posted the position.

3) Recommend how you would use the human resources for an alternative course of
action regarding your case.

There needs to be more communication between the HR department and the hiring man-
ager/ potential candidates. HR should be giving hiring managers weekly updates, while
there are open positions to be filled. If the hiring process is taking longer than expected,
but the hiring manager has shown interest in a candidate the recruiter should update the
candidate that the process is taking longer than expected. A lack of communication re-
sults in situations taking longer and confusion on both sides.

“Strong companies know the kinds of people they want and hire those who fit the
mold”(Boleman, 2021 P.144). When posting a position, there is a job description and a
list of requirements for the role. Having a diverse team is important, but shouldn’t be the
main goal. When a candidate comes along that checks all the boxes, a company should
move forward with the candidate. Taking too long with a hiring process, especially with
no communication, can result in a candidate finding a different company.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

The first thing I would have done differently, would be to ask Mike more direct questions.
When he came to me and asked me to apply for the position, I assumed it was a quick
done deal and I would be hired in no time. That was not the case, I should have asked
him how long the process usually takes. Also I did not realize that HR would be hard to
contact and doesn’t keep potential candidates updated with their hiring status. I shouldn’t
have jumped the gun and gotten myself so excited, before realizing how long this
process would end up taking.

The second thing I would have done differently, would have been to shop around for
other opportunities. I put all my eggs in one basket, and only focused on this one posi-
tion, thinking it would be an easy one to get. It was easy, just the hiring process took
awhile. In that time I could have shopped around for other opportunities and found
something else. I don’t regret waiting this position out, but moving forward I will not put
all my focus onto one position and will shop around.
