CHAPTER III
WORKING STEPS
3.1 Work Preparation

 Turn on the workshop light

 Turn on the compressor
 Implement (3 S)
 Seiri sorted out
sorting is an activity that aims to separate things that are needed from things that
are not needed and throw away things that are not needed.
 Seiton (tidy up)
Tidying is an activity to determine the location and way to store things that are
needed / needed and provide accurate instructions for moving identification.
 Seisou (cleaning)
cleaning here means the activity of cleaning the work space, work equipment and
work facilities from dust and dirt. At the same time, check the function of work equipment
and facilities.
3.2. Work Safety
The steps we will take are as follows:
 We prepare first
 apron
 Shoe
 Gloves
 Work uniform
 Always wear a work apron
 Use hand tools and measuring equipment according to their function
 Check the cleanliness of the workshop before use
 Do the job carefully
 Be careful with liquids that can get on the paint

3.3 PROCESS (SYSTEMATICS & METHOD OF WORK)

3.3.1. Clean the air filter

a. Dry cleaner removal Remove the body panel and air cleaner bousing cover following the
instructions in the repair manual
b. Clean the dust that appears on the air cleaner
c. Remove the dry filter

. Proposal for periodic maintenance of motorbikes | 6

1. Dry paper filter cleaning (using a blow gun)
a. Blow air on one surface of the dry paper filter close to the carburetor to remove
dust that has accumulated in the dry air filter.
b. Blow air on the other surface of the dry paper filter (close to the inlet). This is to
remove dust and fine particles left on the filter
1. Installation of dry paper filters
Following the instructions in the repair manual, install the dry paper filter element,
air cleaner bousing cover, and body panel

3.3.2. Checking/Cleaning Fuel Lines

The role of the fuel lines is to enter the fuel (gasoline) into the carburetor through
the fuel hoses. The fuel lines are arranged so that fuel flows into the carburetor by gravity.
Check fuel cap.
 Fuel tank check
 Check and replace fuel strainer
 Check fuel hose

3.3.3. Checking/Cleaning/Adjusting Spark Plugs

The spark plug is one of the components in the ignition and is installed in the
cylinder head. The high voltage generated by the ignition coil occurs between the center
electrode (enter electrode) and the end of the spark plug (ground electrode) which
produces a spark that ignites the air or fuel mixture in the cylinder.
When the spark plug is used, the center and ground electrodes wear out because the
discharge mainly occurs at the ends. This causes the spark gap (between the center and
ground electrode) to spread apart from electrode wear, carbon falling on the electrode and
insulator projection depending on how the spark plug is used. If the electrode wears out or
the carbon falls continuously, the spark produced by the spark plug becomes weak. This is
why regular maintenance is a must.

3.3.4. Check The Battery

Motorcycle batteries can be classified into two types. That is, batteries that require
the addition of distilled water and those that do not. In general, the former are called
vented batteries and the latter are regular valvesated batteries (Valve Regulated Lead Acid :
VRLA), valve regulated lead acid batteries.

Motorcycle periodic maintenance proposal |7

 The only check that needs to be done is the battery voltage VRLA battery
Check if the voltage between the battery terminals is at least 12.4 V. if it is
below the minimum limit, then stun the battery immediately after the battery is
finished stun, the displayed voltage is higher than the actual voltage level to measure
the voltage after shocking the battery, let the battery rest for a while approx. 30
minutes, then measure the battery voltage.

3.3.5. Adjust Valve Clearance

When the engine is turned on, the valves are exposed to hot heat from the
combustion gases. So it is more precise than the cylinder head. This makes the clearance
smaller than the pad when the engine is cold. If the valve clearance is set to a much smaller
distance than the specified value for a cold engine, the rocker arm may be constantly
pressing against the valve, preventing the valve from fully closing. As a result, problems such
as compression leaks and unstable stationary rotation occur.

3.3.6. Check Compression

Compression stroke: when the piston starts to move upward, the suction valve
closes and locks the cylinder. This upward movement deposits the air/fuel mixture, allowing
for effective combustion. To check it by using a 'compression tester' which is placed in the
spark plug hole.

 Examination procedure
1. Remove the body panels that prevent you from servicing the vehicle
2. Remove the valve adjustment hole cap, timing hole cap, crankshaft hole cap
3. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise until the –T” mark on the flywheel
coincides with the indication on the left crankcase.
4. Enter the feeler gauge into the sparse motion between the sample screws; the
value specified for absolute revo is 0.10
5. After the check valve clearance is correct, install all the components that have
been removed, check the engine starting ease, and check the stationary rotation
after the engine is warmed up

3.3.7. Checking Chain Tension And Slack

1). Chain slack needs to be checked periodically by motorists Excessive drive chain
slack may result in chain detachment wheel.

2). Press the bottom of the chain up, halfway between the sprockets, and measure
wheel chain slack. If the slack exceeds the specified value, adjust chain slack returns.

Motorcycle periodic maintenance proposal |8

3). The amount of drive chain slack varies depending on the repair manual for the
model you are servicing.
3.3.8. CHANGING THE OIL
1. Functions - Functions of Engine Oil
Engine oil has five functions which are defined below.
Lubricants : reduce engine friction
Seal : ensure that the combustion chamber is tightly closed
Coolant : cools the engine components
Cleaning : prevent the formation of impurities
Rust prevention : Prevents the occurrence of rust on the inspected metal surface
and change the engine oil
engine oil should be serviced regularly, inspected, and replaced. Less service can result
in issues such as those listed below.

2. Typical Problems Caused by Engine Oil

 Too much engine oil
If the level is too high the gears and crankshaft agitate the oil vigorously, quickly
increasing the exhaust oil mist causing it through the breather hose. The increased
amount of discharged oil causes it to clog the elements and cause engine problems.
 Less amount of oil
If the oil level is not too low, then the oil level changes frequently as the vehicle is
moving, possibly allowing the strainer to suck in air. This prevents adequate
lubrication, and is likely to cause interference in the engine, resulting in engine pad
failure.
 Mixing with inappropriate engine oil additives
Many types of engine oil additives that can overcome the decline in the quality of
engine oil can be purchased on the market. Because they are primarily intended for
use in automobile engines, they may contain friction reducing agents that are not
suitable for motorcycle engines. The use of such additives in motorcycle engines can
result in clutch slippage.

CHAPTER V

CLOSING
With the grace of ALLAH SWT, we were able to complete the final project proposal quickly,
even though there were some deficiencies in the preparation, hopefully the results of our
efforts can be an incentive to move forward.
Maybe what is described in this proposal is not satisfactory, but this is the maximum result
that we can do according to our level as students of a technology and industrial vocational
high school in the field of motorcycle engineering and business expertise for the 2023 –
2024 academic year.
I made this final project proposal, according to what I did in the final national competency
exam at a technology and industrial vocational high school in the field of motorcycle
engineering and business expertise.
5.1.conclusion
 The preparation of this final project proposal is in accordance with the systematic
work we did in the final school exams.
 MOTORCYCLE REGULAR MAINTENANCEis a field of services needed by motorcycle
users.
 The processing time is + - 1 hour
5.2. SUGGESTION
Thus, to achieve good work results in the national competency final examination,
students must be trained in practical workshops to prepare themselves for their
abilities to work.
 Giving more emphasis to learning materials related to work practices.
 Workshop improvement is an effort to create a better and tidier workshop
atmosphere where later we will work in a better atmosphere
 Improve workshop facilities and equipment as well as their maintenance, so that
they are ready to use at any time.
