 Collect urine sample on a sterile container

2. Midstream Clean-catch STERILE SPECIMEN BAP 2-3 DAYS


 Wash genital area with soap and water CONTAINER (WITH MAC
 Start to pee and collect the midstream portion of the urine using a sterile container. (Don’t collect RED SCREW CAP)
the first and last portion of the urine to reduce contamination of sample)

3. Infant collection WEE BAG BAP 2-3 DAYS
Wash the genital area of the infant using lukewarm water or using a cotton soaked in water. MAC
OR
Dry the area with a clean towel.
Securely place the wee bag on the infant’s genital area. STERILE SPECIMEN
Collect urine. CONTAINER (WITH
Immediately transport the urine to the laboratory RED SCREW CAP)

4. Suprapubic Aspirate STERILE SPECIMEN BAP 2-3 DAYS


 The procedure is performed by the physician CONTAINER (WITH MAC
 The procedure can be assisted by NOD or MTOD. If MTOD is unavailable, procedure can be RED SCREW CAP)
assisted by NOD alone. Specimen will be accepted as long as sterile collection is observed.
1. Blood Extraction ADULT: BAP 5-6 DAYS
 Performed by Medical Technologist CAP
BLOOD CULTURE
 Prepare the materials needed. MAC
BOTTLE (GREEN)
 Ready the culture bottle by placing a cotton ball soaked in alcohol on top of the rubber stopper.
 Observe aseptic collection
 Clean the site with:
 Isopropyl Alcohol (30-60 sec) OR
 Povidone iodine/ Chlorhexidine (30-60 sec)
PEDIA:
BLOOD  Isopropyl Alcohol (30-60 sec)
 Ensure that there are no traces of Iodine left BLOOD CULTURE
 Avoid touching the site if possible. If needed, perform hand rub using alcohol. BOTTLE (YELLOW)
 Extract sufficient blood volume.
 Replace the needle, remove soaked cotton and puncture the rubber stopper of the
culture bottle to transfer blood.
2. Catch Blood
 Catch blood is not considered as sterile sample. Exposure of blood may result to contamination.
 Reject specimen and follow procedure on Blood Extraction above. (#1)

SPUTUM Instruction: STERILE SPECIMEN BAP 2-3 DAYS


 Wash/ gargle/ brush their teeth CONTAINER (WITH MAC
 Deep breathe 3 times (inhale-exhale) RED SCREW CAP) GBA
 Deep cough to expectorate the “mucoid” (not the salivary) specimen BCA (CAP)
 Label specimen with the Name, Date and Time of Collection.
 Submit to the laboratory within 1 hour

*** If for AFB:

a. Spot-to-spot Collection

OPD: Specimen may be placed inside the refrigerator while waiting for the next specimen
to be collected.
: After obtaining the second specimen, transport with ice and submit to the
laboratory within 1 hour
In-Px: Submit the first specimen first to the laboratory. Obtain the second specimen then
immediately transport to laboratory.
b. 2 to 3-Consecutive Day Collection
 Submit to the laboratory immediately after collection

Instruction: STERILE VIAL BAP 3-4 DAYS


 Performed by Attending Physician with assistance of NOD (AUTOCLAVED) CAP
 Expected Specimen: CSF, Pericardial Fluid, Synovial Fluid, Amniotic Fluid, Pleural Fluid, MAC

Hydrocoele, Peritoneal Fluid TSB

SPECIMEN ACCEPTANCE WHAT TO DO

a. Whole ETA ACCEPT if not - Assess the tube, cut the tubing near the mucoid
tube dried & sterility is portion using sterile scissors.
ENDOTRACHEAL - Fish-out the mucoid portion and plant to the culture
observed
ASPIRATE plate directly
b. Cut ETA tube ACCEPT - Fish-out the mucoid portion and plant to the culture
in sterile vial plate directly
c. ETA in sterile ACCEPT - Fish-out the mucoid portion and plant to the culture
vial plate directly
d. ETA washed in ACCEPT - Fish-out the mucoid portion and plant to the culture
sterile saline plate directly
- Transfer in as sterile tube and centrifuge if mucoid
portion is not visible.
- Decant supernatant, fish out the sediment plant to
the culture plate directly

EXUDATE 1. Open Wound STERILE SPECIMEN BAP 2-3 DAYS


 Disinfect surrounding of the wound with alcohol or wash with sterile saline; ask assistance CONTAINER (WITH MAC
from NOD RED SCREW CAP) THIO
 Aspirate/swab deep into the lesion
 Collect 2 swabs placed in a sterile vial

2. Closed Wound
 Performed by Attending Physician with assistance of NOD and/or MTOD.
 Disinfect surrounding of the wound with alcohol and iodine
 Aspirate/swab deep into the lesion
 Collect 2 swabs placed in a sterile vial

3. Penile Discharge
 Collection is with assistance of MALE MTOD.
 Wash genital area with soap and water
 Insert the Dacron swab 3 cm into the urethra. Rotate for a few seconds.
 Place in as sterile container
*** If Dacron swab is unavailable, use a sterile swab lubricated with sterile saline.

1. Stool STERILE STOOL BAP 3-4 DAYS


 Direct collection placed in as sterile container. CONTAINER (WITH MAC
 Submit to the laboratory within 1 hour. If there is delay, place in the refrigerator or transport RED SCREW CAP) SSA
STOOL/ RECTAL with ice. TCBS
SWAB
2. Rectal Swab
 Collection is done by the Attending Physician or NOD
 Swab must be moistened with sterile saline.
 Submit to the laboratory to be processed immediately.
