HELPING WORKERS MANAGE BAD NEWS

1. Dr Bruce Irvine, Executive Director of the Grubb Institute:

“Managing a fearful workforce is one of the greatest problems for
companies in the current economic climate.”
If organizations do not manage anxiety in tough trading condition:
 employees will not work effectively
 performance will suffer at a time when every penny of revenue
counts.

2. Judith Bell, Director of the TCS:

“In times of recession, people can behave defensively in order to avoid
reality.”
 try to get teams to address some of the difficulties that lie under the
surface
 prevent people from getting on with the task in hand.
 draw on therapeutic models to examine employees behaviour at
work.

3. Ms Bell and Dr Ivine:

Ms Bell: In stressful conditions
 People belive: “aggressive or bullying behaviour is justified”.
 Fact: leaders need to understand why people are not performing
well and work harder to motivate workers.
Dr Ivine: Team leaders: go back to a tried-and-tested approach.

4. Sebastian Parsons:
 Use Grubb Institute to motivate staff and survive the downturn
 Come up with new ways of marketing with less money to spend
