EARTH SCIENCE

1. IDENTIFY THE DIFFERENT SEASONS OF THE EARTH.

The four seasons—spring, summer, fall, and winter—follow one another regularly. Each has
its own light, temperature, and weather patterns that repeat yearly.

2. HOW MANY PERCENT OF THE WORLD IS COVERED BY ICE?

At present ice covers about 10% of the Earths surface though this fluctuates through the
seasons owing to sea ice creation and melting.

At the peak of the last ice age, ice covered about 35% of the Earths surface causing sea levels
to drop by around 120 meters, exposing most of the continental shelf.

During the early Eocene about 54–48 million years ago, there was almost no ice covering the
Earths surface and water levels were up at least 60 meters, which would have drowned most
coastal lands we have today.

During the Cryogenian period about 650 million years ago it appears that most of, if not all of
the Earth’s surface was covered in ice, resulting in it being called by some Snowball Earth or
at least Slush ball Earth.

In each of these scenarios the level of CO2 in the atmosphere was a major factor.
