Assignment #4:
Transmission Lines
AVTE 115 1C-S
Engr. Jover Boyd T. Chan

1. What are Transmission Lines?

Transmission lines are used to transfer information. Distances, signals

band with and the technology used depend the type of information. They are set of
wires or dual conductor lines that work as a medium to transmit signals in radio
frequency circuits or electric transmission system from point of generation to
receiving station. Towers act as transverse electromagnetic mode wave which
guides electromagnetic waves.

They are part of a system the gets the electricity from the power
station straight to our homes. These lines that are on poles down our streets and
that are connected to our houses and other premises are referred to as the
distribution network and rarely higher than 11,000 volts.

2. Differentiate open circuited transmission line from a short circuited transmission

line?

A short circuited transmission line, is when the line in shorted from the
load end while an open circuited transmission line is opened from load end. The
current of an open circuit transmission line is at minimum while a short circuited line
is at maximum. The voltage of a open circuited line is maximum while a short
circuited line is at minimum. Its phase angle also differs because a open circuited
has its phase angle at phase while a short has it a 160 degrees. The first node of
maximum voltage in a short circuited line is λ/4 away towards the source while an
open circuited line is λ/2 away.
