ROLES AND BEHAVIORS OF FACILITATIVE TEACHERS

Concept Notes:
The teachers in the school play a crucial role in facilitating the teaching-learning process.
The box below describes their tasks as facilitative teachers (Smith and Blake, 2005).

Let’s Try This!

The facilitative teacher functions enumerated can be effectively performed when
teachers possess the following characteristics and practice the corresponding teacher
behavior (Methodist University, 2010)

Discuss in your own words the significant characteristics and behaviors of a

facilitative teacher.
Characteristics and Behaviors of Facilitative Teachers What I know . . .
Paying attention to people shows we
care. Paying attention to details helps to
accomplish our goals faster and with
accuracy. The most effective people are
those who give their undivided attention
to the people, problems, opportunities,
and moments that come into their life

Being sincere, candid, or honest When

students look at the teacher, they see a
genuine reflection of that teacher's
personal identity. They also hear from
someone who speaks with candor and
integrity. Being true to oneself, the
teacher is a self-aware person who has
made a commitment to teaching.
To teach all students according to
today's standards, teachers need to
understand subject matter deeply and
flexibly so they can help students create
useful cognitive maps, relate one idea to
another, and address misconceptions.
Teachers need to see how ideas
connect across fields and to everyday
life.

Teachers intentionally build and sustain

respectful relationships with students in
the classroom. Teachers who form
respectful relationships with students
are able to work collaboratively with
children and manage power dynamics in
ways that increase student participation,
engagement, and achievement.

Communication is both receptive and

expressive. Teachers must be skilled at

listening to their students as well as

explaining things clearly. Teachers need

clarity of thought to present the material.

They must be able to break down

complex ideas into simpler parts and

smaller steps to transmit to their

students.
