The Power of Language

WELCOME BACK TO KWIK THINKING!

Today’s session is about optimizing your language.

Changing the words you use on a regular basis has the power to change your focus and the
way you feel about things. It can help you to optimize your possibilities, your potential,
and your power in life.

NOT ALL WORDS ARE EQUAL

Try replacing the word BALANCE with HARMONY.

Why?

The question, “How can I balance my life?”, can cause stress in itself because the word
balance can be loaded. After all, balance means to have equal weight.

The idea of giving equal time and weight to everything in your life can be stressful. You
might imagine yourself on a tightrope, trying not to slip, trying to keep everything going at
once.

But really, your life is more like art—you might not give everything equal time, but it all
comes together in harmony, like an orchestra.

Try using the word HARMONY and notice how it makes you feel.

ALL THE THINGS YOU GET TO DO

GOT is a word you might commonly use to describe all the things you need to do in your life.

This word can give you a negative feeling of obligation—you have to do these things.

Trying changing GOT to GET. It’s only a tiny shift, but try it and notice how it changes your
feelings.

The Power of Language

Take a look at these examples and notice the different feelings you get when you say and
hear them:

I’ve got to work out becomes I get to work out.

I’ve got to go to my job becomes I get to go to my job.
I’ve got to pick up my kids becomes I get to pick up my kids today.

Change your words and you change your life. Change your words and you change the
world.

NOTES
As you go through your day, try noting how you talk about your schedule and
responsibilities.
> Do you notice any words that you tend to repeat?
> Are there any activities in your life that you find yourself talking about with the word “I
have got to do this”?
> Do you find yourself dreading activities because of the way you talk about them? e.g. “I
have to study.”
> Are there any parts of your schedule you could try describing with “I get to do this”?

Make some notes for yourself below.

“I DON’T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS”

Quincy Jones once told me: “I don’t have any problems, I just have puzzles.”

This is an example of how powerful changing the labels you use can be.

We all have problems, but we can change the way we think and feel about them through
tiny shifts in language.

Remember: The quality of your life comes down to the quality of the words and
language you use to yourself and others.

LANGUAGE CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE

The language we choose to use can change:

> How we focus

> How we feel
> How we think

THE POWER OF PERSPECTIVE

One of the best ways to learn and change your thinking is to go to different places.

At a conference, I heard the owner of several travel agencies say: “If more people traveled,
there would be less prejudice.”

And as Quincy Jones said: “You have to go to know.”

NOTES ON TRAVEL
> What can travel bring you? What does it expose you to?
> How does travel impact your brain?
> Can you list some places you could travel to within the next few years?
> If you are unable to travel, or your ability to travel is limited, can you think of some places
in your neighborhood or nearby that you haven’t been to? Is there anywhere nearby you
would like to visit to create a new experience for yourself? (e.g. a library, a new coffee
shop)

WORDS ARE POWERFUL

If you realized how powerful your mind was, you wouldn’t say or think words that you
didn’t want to be true.
