COORDINATION NUMBER

-the number of atoms or ions immediately surrounding a central atom in a crystal structure

(1) Simple Cubic Cell

Coordination Number = 6

(2) Body Centered Cubic Cell

In this unit cells, the lattice points/atoms are at the center of the unit cell, as well as
at each corner

Coordination Number = 8

(3) Face Centered Cubic Cell

In this type of cubic cells, the lattice points are at the center of each face, as well as at
each corner

Coordination number = 12
ATOMIC PACKING FACTOR

Atomic Packing Factor (APF) or Packing Efficiency is the fraction of volume in a crystal
structure that is occupied by constituent atoms

It is determined by assuming that atoms are rigid spheres

The radius of the spheres is taken to be the maximum value such that atoms do not overlap

(1) Simple Cubic Cell

APF = 0.52

(2) Body Centered Cell

APF = 0.68

(3.) Face Centered Cell

APF = 0.74
