1. TRADITIONAL ROWS AND COLUMNS SET UP

Source: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2148420/GCSEs-arent-fit-purpose-
school-leavers-dont-master-Rs-says-CBI.html
Description: The traditional rows and columns set up is a type of classroom setting
where students are arranged in rows and columns and teacher is in front of the whole
class. This setting promotes teacher centered and learner centered approach and is
effective for class demonstrations, lectures, and examinations. Additionally, this type
of classroom setting encourages students to do their works independently and
productively. Teachers here can easily facilitate and mediate the classroom as he/she
can see the class in front of him/her and this is also suitable for all types of class sizes,
smaller or larger. However, this classroom setting is not appropriate for group
discussions and cooperative learning. Lastly, the teacher might have a hard time
moving from one student to another for individual monitoring as it may take time
especially with a larger class size.
2. CLUSTERS

Source: https://inside.ewu.edu/managementtoolbox/cluster-seating/
Description: This type of classroom setting enables students to work and cooperate
with each other easily and effective as they are grouped in 2-5 and are facing each
other while they are also facing and listening to the teacher. A cluster set up stimulates
better learning opportunities for learners as they don’t just have to listen all day long
to the lecture provided by the teacher but instead, they have the chance to talk and
brainstorm ideas from their classmates which will also strengthen their relationship
further developing their skills in communication, collaboration, leadership, and problem
solving. Just like the traditional classroom setting, this set up has also its downsides.
Cluster setting decreases individual accountability, prone to distractions and noise, and
increases off- tasks behaviors.
3. LEARNING LABS

professional-development/
Description: Learning lab classroom setting is a set up best suitable for science subjects
where students and the teachers move from one collaborative learning space to do
experiments or demonstrations. This fosters curiosity of minds and promotes inquiry
learning and at the same time, it motivates the students to learn by observing and
doing/experimenting which can enhance their problem solving and critical thinking
skills. The teacher’s role here is critical as he/she will guide and monitor the students
as they do the activity together. On the other hand, this classroom set up might
encourage off- tasks behavior when students are not monitored well.

QUESTIONS:
1. What is an ideal classroom for you?
ANSWER: An ideal classroom for me is one which creates a positive environment
for both the teacher and students where they can favorably develop their
morale, well- being, and academic success. A classroom is also ideal when it is
organized—from the seating arrangements/alignment, specifically, the entire
learning space where it is advantageous for students and the teacher to move
around and participate in the discussion. Additionally, I consider a classroom
ideal when students don’t just remain passive like listening to the teacher whole
day long and just receiving information but instead, they interact and share
ideas with one another. Lastly, when a classroom promotes a culture where
everyone is included—in short, when a classroom is inclusive.
2. As a teacher, how will you make your classroom ideal?
ANSWER: First off, I will look into the outer aspect/structure of my classroom
where I will make sure that all is organized from the seating arrangements,
tables, books, etc. for which they can feel that they are safe, is away from any
distractions, and can learn comfortably. Second, I will set rules and policies
inside the classroom that students must abide for a better classroom
management. Third, I will know my students, assess their needs, plan out my
lesson well where I will only include the most essential lessons which are of
course aligned with my learning objectives and does cater the students’ learning
needs. Also, I will apply appropriate teaching approach, strategies, and
assessments so that I can monitor the progress of my students well. Thus, I will
consider both the outer and inner aspects of my classroom so that my students
can learn effectively.
