Instruction and sample script
Instruction:
Imagine that a town wants more tourists to visit. Here are some ideas for you to discuss.

having more shops

Building a large
having more shops
nightclub

Why would these ideas

attract more tourists to the
town?

building holiday
providing parks flats
putting up security
cameras

Sample group discussion script:

Student A : Have you heard that tourism in this city is declining due to recent events?
Student B : Yes, my dad talked about that with their friends this morning.
Student C : I wonder if I can share some of my ideas to the government.
Student B : What do you have in mind?
Student C : Not much, but I believe that building a large nightclub will attract tourists.
Especially young ones who enjoy partying and going out with friends, don’t you
think?
Student A : I think so. However it might not be the best type of tourism, because it can disturb
neighbours and residents. How about having more shops?
Student B : That’s a great idea! If the city offers a good shopping experience, many people will
be attracted to it, which I guess is quite positive for everyone. Wouldn’t you agree?
Student C : Yes, you’re right. But what do you think if they build more holiday flats and put up
security cameras around the crowd, so that the tourists feel safe here.
Student A : Well, if you ask me, putting up security cameras isn’t very appealing to anyone. But
holiday flats can be attractive.
Student B : I’m quite agree with you, security cameras are not appealing at all. Perhaps,
providing parks around the neighbourhoods is a good thing, but not for tourists, I
guess.
Student C : So which idea would be the best for our town?
Student B : I would say the best two options would probably be the shops and holiday flats,
don’t you think?
Student A : I see what you think, but after given some thoughts, shall we stick to having more
shops?
Student C : Yes sure, I also think it’s the best one.
Student B : That sounds great.
