NARRATIVE TEXT

TEXT 1:
The Wolf and The Goat
A wolf saw a goat grazing at the edge of a high cliff. The wolf smacked his lips at the thought of a fine
goat dinner.
“My dear friend,” said the wolf in his sweetest voice, “aren’t you afraid you will fall down from that cliff?
Come down here and graze on this fine grass beside me on safe, level ground.”
“No, thank you,” said the goat.
“Well then,” said the wolf, “aren’t you cold up there in the wind? You would be warmer grazing down
here beside me in this sheltered area.”
“No, Thank you,” said the goat.
“But the grass tastes better down here!” said the exasperated wolf,”Why dine alone?”
“My dear wolf,” the goat finally said, “are you quite sure that it is My dinner you are worrying about and
not your own?”

TEXT 2:
One day a man stopped at a flower shop to order some flowers. He wanted to send it to his mother who
lived far in another town through a delivery company. Meanwhile he was looking at sad young girl who
was sitting in front of the flower shop. He asked her what was wrong and she replied, “I wanted to buy a
red rose for my mother but my money is not enough”. The man smiled and said, “Come on in with me I’ll
buy you a rose.” He bought the little girl a rose and he ordered for his own mother flowers too.
After buying a rose flower for the girl the man offered the girl a ride to her home. She said” yes please!
You can take me to my mother. She directed him to a cemetery. The girl placed the rose on her mother’s
fresh grave. Knowing the girl’s mother had died the man realized that he must show his love to his mother
while she was still alive. Then the man returned to the flower shop. He cancelled the flower delivery order
picked up the rose flower and drove to reach his mother’s house.

TEXT 3:
A Milkmaid had been in the meadow to milk her cows. Now she was returning home with a pail of milk
on her hand.
She thought, "I will make cream and butter out of this milk. Then after selling them, I will buy eggs. And
when they hatch, I shall have a good poultry farm".
She further thought, "I will sell some of my chickens and buy a fine dress. Seeing it on my body at the
party, all the boys will admire me. But I will turn them away".
She went on day dreaming; she forgot about the pail on her head. She moved her head suddenly and the
pail of milk came tumbling down. It was broken and all the milk split.
"Dear, o dear!" she cried, "I have lost mine all".

TEXT 4:
Once upon a time, there was a kingdom in Java that was attacked by another kingdom. The king asked
his Queen to save her life. Alas! In the middle of the jungle, the enemy killed all her guards. However, the
Queen was lucky because she changed herself into a golden snail and survived.
One day, an old woman saw the snail and took it home. She looked after it. Whenever the old woman was
not at home, the snail turned into a human being. She cooked and did the household chores. When the old
woman got home, the Queen quickly changed into a snail again. It happened several times and made the
old woman curious. One day, the old woman peeped and saw what was going on. She broke in,
immediately. She asked, "Why did you change yourself into a snail?". The Queen told her what happened.
The old woman was surprised to know that the snail was a Queen.

Later, from the head of the village they discovered that the king had won the battle and he was looking for
his wife. Then the village head sent a message to the king telling him that his wife was safe.

Several days later, the King and his guards came for the queen. They thanked the villagers for their
kindness and brought the old women to their palace.

TEXT 5:
Long, long ago, when the gods and goddesses used to mingle in the affairs of mortals, there was a small
kingdom on the slope of Mount Wayang in West Java. The King, named Sang Prabu, was a wise man.
He had an only daughter, called Princess Teja Nirmala, who was famous for her beauty but she was not
married. One day Sang Prabu made up his mind to settle the matter by a show of strength.
After that, Prince of Blambangan, named Raden Begawan had won the competition. Unfortunately, the
wicked fairy, Princess Segara fell in love with Raden Begawan and used magic power to render him
unconscious and he forgot his wedding. When Sang Prabu was searching, Raden Begawan saw him and
soon realized that he had been enchanted by the wicked fairy. The fairy could not accept this, so she
killed Raden Begawan. When Princess Teja Nirmala heard this, she was very sad. So a nice fairy took
her to the Kahyangan.
TEXT 6:
A long time ago, there lived on the island of Bali a giant-like creature named Kebo Iwo. The people of
Bali used to say that Kebo Iwo was everything, a destroyer as well as a creator. He was satisfied with the
meal, but this meant for the Balinese people enough food for a thousand men.
Difficulties arose when for the first time the barns were almost empty and the new harvest was still a long
way off. This made Kebo Iwo wild with great anger. In his hunger, he destroyed all the houses and even
all the temples. It made the Balinese turn to rage.
So, they came together to plan steps to oppose this powerful giant by using his stupidity. They asked
Kebo Iwo to build them a very deep well, and rebuild all the houses and temples he had destroyed. After
they fed Kebo Iwo, he began to dig a deep hole.
One day he had eaten too much, he fell asleep in the hole. The oldest man in the village gave a sign, and
the villagers began to throw the limestone they had collected before into the hole. The limestone made
the water inside the hole boiling . Kebo Iwo was buried alive. Then the water in the well rose higher and
higher until at last it overflowed and formed Lake Batur. The mound of earth dug from the well by Kebo
Iwo is known as Mount Batur.

TEXT 7:
A long time ago, very few people lived in the New Territories. There were only a few villages. If the
people wanted to go from one village to another, they often had to pass through wild and unsafe forest.
One day, a farmer’s young wife went to the next village to visit her own mother and brother. She brought
along her baby son. When it was time for her to leave, her brother said “ it is getting dark. Let my son,
Ah Tim go with you through the forest.”
So Ah Tim led the way and the young woman followed behind, carrying her baby. When they were in the
forest, suddenly they saw a group of wolves. They began to run to avoid the danger, but Ah Tim kicked
against a stone and fell down. At once the wolves caught him. The young woman cried to the wolves, “
please eat my own son instead.” Then, she put her baby son on the ground in front of the wolves and took
her nephew away. Everyone understood that this was because the woman was very good and kind. She
had offered her own son’s life to save her nephew.
They ran back to the house and called for help. All men in the village fetched thick sticks and went back
with her into the forest. When they got there, they saw something very strange. Instead of eating the
woman’s baby the wolves were playing with him.

TEXT 8:
Once upon a time, there was an old woman who lived in a very old hut near a forest with her only
daughter. The daughter’s name is Misna. She is beautiful but she had envious heart.
One day she saw girl of her age passing by her hut. The girl was joining her father hunting. She dressed
in beautiful cloth. His father’s assistants respected her. Misna could not sleep when she was
remembering this. She was very angry with her condition. She hated her hopeless mother.
In the morning she shouted at her mother. She wanted her mother to buy the most beautiful gown in the
markets for her. Of course her mother could not afford it. Then she cried and cried. She did not want to
eat anything. Her mother was very sad. She decided to sell a piece of land, the only valuable thing that
she had. She bought her beloved daughter a very beautiful dress.
Misna admired herself. She wanted to show everybody that she was a very beautiful girl. She asked her
mother to bring her to another village. Along the way, she smiled to everyone. People in the village
thought that she was a princess. They gave her a high respect and invited her to have meal in their house.
Misna enjoyed this and told everybody that she was princess and mother was maid. Her mother was very
sad but she kept her felling deep in the heart.
On the way home Misna met a handsome prince. He was interested in her and wanted to marry her.
Misna told the prince that her mother had died and father went married to another woman. She was
having a long trip with her loyal maid. Listening to this, her mother was very upset. She cried loudly
Misna was very angry to her and told her to be away from her.
Suddenly there was a heavy rain accompanied with big thunders. Everyone run away to save themselves.
Misna was very afraid. She cried. Her mother wanted to help her but she did not want to. At that time a
big thunder hit her to dead.

TEXT 9:
Once upon a time there lived a little girl named Snow White. She lived with her aunt and uncle because
her parents were dead.
One day she heard her uncle and aunt talking about leaving Snow White in the castle because they both
wanted to go to America and they didn’t have enough money to take Snow White.
Snow White didn’t want her uncle and aunt to do that so she decided that it would be best if she ran away.
The next morning she ran away into the woods. She was very tired and hungry. Then she saw a little
cottage. She knocked but no one answered so she went inside and fell asleep.
Meanwhile, the seven dwarfs were coming home from work. There they found Snow White sleeping.
Then Snow White woke up. She saw the dwarfs.
The dwarfs said, “What is your name?”
Snow White said, “My name is Snow White.”
Then, Snow White told the dwarfs the whole story.
The dwarfs said, “If you want, you may live here with us.”
Snow White answered, “Oh, could I? Thank you.”
Finally, Snow White and the seven dwarfs lived happily ever after.

TEXT 10:
In the Kingdom of Medang Kamulan, in Java, came a young man, by the name of Aji Saka to fight
Dewata Cengkar, the cruel King of the Country who had a habit to eat human flesh of his own people.
Aji Saka himself he came from Bumi Majeti.
One day he told his two servants, by the name of Dara and Sembodo, that he was going to java. He told
them that while he was away, both of them have to guards his Heirloom / Pusoko. No one except Aji
Saka himself not allowed to take the Pusoko. In the big battle, Aji Saka could successfully push Dewata
Cengkar to fall to the South Sea. Dewata Cengkar did not die, he became a Bajul Putih (White
Crocodile). Aji Saka became a ruler of Medangkamulan.
Meanwhile a woman of the village of Dadapan, found an egg. She put the egg in her Lumbung (Rice
Barn). After a certain period the egg vanished, instead a snake found in the rice barn. The villagers
would like to kill the snake, but the snake said : “I’m the son Aji Saka, bring me to him”.
Aji Saka told the snake, that he would be recognized as his son, if the could kill the Bajul Putih in the
South Sea. After a long stormy battle which both sides demonstrating physical strength and showing
skillfull ability of fighting, the snake could kill Bajul Putih.
As had been promised the snake was recognized as Aji Saka’s son and he was given a name Jaka
Linglung (a stupid boy).
In the palace Jaka Linglung greedily ate domestic pets of the palace. He was punished by the King,
expelling him to live in the Jungle of Pesanga. he was tightly roped until he could not move his head. He
was instructed only to eat things which fall to his mouth.
One day, a group of 9 (nine) village boys were playing around in that Jungle. Suddenly it was raining
heavily. They had to find a shelter, luckily there was a cave. Only 8 (eight) boys went inside the cave,
the other one who was suffering from very bad skin disease, sting and dirty, he had to stay out of the cave.
All of a sudden, the cave was falling apart. The 8 (eight) boys vanished, only the one who stayed outside
was safe. The cave in fact was the mouth of Jaka Linglung.

TEXT 11:
Once upon a time there was a poor widow who had an only son named Jack. They were so poor that they
didn’t have anything except a cow. When the cow had grown too old, his mother sent Jack to the market
to sell it. On the way to the market, Jack met a butcher who had some beautiful beans in his hand. The
butcher told the boy that the beans were of great value and persuaded the silly lad to sell the cow for the
beans.
Jack brought them, happily. When he told his mother about this, his mother became so angry that she
threw the beans out of the window. When Jack woke up in the morning, he felt the sun shining into a pan
of his room, but all the rest was quite dark and shady. So he jumped to the window. What did he see?
The beanstalk grew up quite close past Jack’s window. He opened the window and jumped to the
beanstalk which ran up just like a big ladder
He climbed and climbed till at last he reached the sky. While looking around, he saw a very huge castle.
He was very amazed. Then Jack walked along the path leading to the castle. There was a big tail woman
on the doorstep. Jack greeted her and asked for the giantess mercy to give him breakfast, because he fell
very hungry. Although the giantess grumbled at first, finally she gave Jack a hunk of bread and cheese
and a jug of milk.
Jack hadn’t finished when the whole house began to tremble with the noise of someone’s coming. “Oh!
It’s my husband!” cried the giantess. “What on earth shall I do?” Hastily the giantess opened a very big
cupboard and hid Jack there.

TEXT:15
A man and his son were going to the market. While they were walking, a country man passed and said,
“You fool, what a donkey for but to ride upon?”
So the man put the boy on the donkey. But soon, some passersby said, “See that lazy, young steer. He lets
his father walk while he rides.”

So the man ordered his boy to get off and got on himself, but the passerby said, “Shame on… that lazy old
man, he lets his poor son walk, while he rides.”

The man did not know what to do. Last, he took his boy on the donkey. Then the passerby said, “Aren’t
you ashamed of yourself for overloading the poor donkey?”

The man and the boy got off. They cut down a pole, tied the donkey’s feet to it and raised the pole to their
shoulders. They arrived to a bridge when the donkey, getting one of its feet loose, kick all out and caused
the boy to drop his end of the pole. In the struggle, the donkey fell over the bridge and then it was
drowned.

TEXT: 16
The old witch locked Hansel in a cage and set Gretel to clean the house. She planned to eat them both.
Each night the children cried and begged the witch to let them go.
Meanwhile, at home, their stepmother was beginning to wish she had never tried to get rid of the children.
“I must find them,” she said and set off into the forest.
Many hours later, when her feet were tired from walking and her lips were dry from thirst, she came to the
cottage belonging to the witch. The stepmother peeped through the window. Her heart cried out when
she saw the two children.
She picked up the broom leaning against the door and crept inside. The witch was putting some stew in
the oven when the stepmother gave her an almighty push. The witch fell into the oven and the stepmother
shut the door.
‘Children, I have come to save you,’ she said hugging them tightly. I have done a dreadful thing.
I hope in time you will forgive me. Let me take you home and become a family again. They returned to
their home and the stepmother became the best mother anyone could wish to have, and of course they
lived happily ever after!

Ali Baba
Once upon a time there were 40 cruel thieves who
put their stolen money and treasures in a cave. They went in the cave by saying ”Open Sesame” to the
cave entrance. A poor person, named Ali Baba saw them while they were doing that, so he heard the
opening word. After they left, he went toward the cave and opened it. Suddenly he found a very large
quantity of money and golden treasures. He took some of it and went back home. After that he became a
rich man and his brother wanted to know how he became rich.
Ali Baba turned into the richest man in his village. His evil brother was really jealous of him, and wanted
to know how he could get such a lot of money. Therefore, when Ali Baba went to the cave again to take
some more money, his brother followed him. He saw everything, and decided to go back the next day to
take some money for himself. The next morning he found a lot of money in the cave, and he wanted to
take all of them. Unfortunately, when he was busy carrying the money to his house, the thieves came. The
boss of the thieves asked him how he knew about the cave. He told everything, but unluckily they killed
him and went to Ali Baba’s house.
After finding Ali Baba’s house, they made a plan to kill him the following night. Some of the thieves hid
in big jars, and the boss pretended that he was a merchant who wanted to sell the jars to Ali Baba. Ali
Baba who was a kind man invited the boss of the thief to have lunch together.
After lunch they took a rest. Luckily, the house maid went out of the house, and found that there were
thieves inside the jars. She finally boiled hot oil and poured it into the jars to kill all of them. The boss of
the thieves was caught, and put into prison.
Ali Baba was saved from the danger, and he finally lived happily ever after with his maid who became his
wife shortly after.

Golden Eggs
Long time ago a remote village, in central China was inhabited mainly with farmers and hunters.
One day, a poor farmer lost his entire livestock to flood. He prayed hard to God for help or his family
would die of starvation. Few days later, an old man with long grey beard, passed by his house took pity on
him. He gave him a goose and said “ I don’t have any expensive thing to give you and hope this goose
will help you to ease your hardship.” A week later to almost surprise the farmer found and egg in his yard.
This was no ordinary egg. It was a golden egg. He was suddenly overcome with joy. Thereafter, his
livelihood had rapidly improved but the farmer had forgotten his earlier hardship. He became lazy,
arrogant and spendthrift. Strangely, the goose only laid one golden egg every six months.
The greedy farmer lost his patient and slaughtered his goose thinking there were plenty of golden eggs
inside its stomach. Though he very much regretted for his foolishness, it’s already too late.

Pinocchio
Once upon a time, there was a puppeteer named Geppetto. He really wanted a boy but his wife has been
died for a long time ago. One day, he had an idea. He wanted to make a puppet so he would never felt
lonely again. He made a puppet all night without resting. In the morning, finally he finished his work. He
named the puppet, Pinocchio. He played whole day with Pinocchio. However, he felt lonely again
because Pinocchio couldn’t talk or walk by himself. In the middle of the night, Geppetto prayed to the
God. His wish was Pinocchio became a real boy, human. He thought it on his mind in his dream.
In the next morning, he surprised. Pinocchio was alive. He really was happy. He tough Pinocchio how to
walk, how to speak, how to read etc. like a teacher. Pinocchio learned fast. He entered an elementary
school. One day, Pinocchio felt bored. So, he went home late. Geppetto worried about him. When
Pinocchio came to home, Geppetto asked him. He said he was on school but he didn’t. Suddenly,
Pinocchio’s nose grow longer. It meant that Pinocchio lied.
The next day, Pinocchio got caught by thieves. The thieves was the owner of circus. Pinocchio became a
slave for the circus. He was famous because he was a talking puppet. Geppetto worried him. Pinocchio
didn’t come home for 2 days. He found Pinocchio everywhere. When he discovered the sea, big wave
smashed him. He was on whale’s stomach when he awoke. He couldn’t find the way out.
In different place, Pinocchio finally could get out from circus. He went to home but Geppetto wasn’t on
there. He found Geppetto at sea. He had the same accident like Geppetto. He met Geppetto in whale’s
stomach. They got out from its stomach by made a fire.
They went home back together. In the end, they lived happy forever after.

Princess Laiamon and Crocodile – Folktale from Kalimantan Indonesia
Laiamon was the daughter of Dayak chief. One day, she went to the river to take a bath. She was
swimming when a crocodile held her leg.
“Oh, please don’t eat me!” cried Laiamon.
“Hohoho!” laughed the crocodile. “I won’t let you go. I like eating pretty girls very much.”
Laiamon was a clever girl. She then said, “My father is a chief. He is a rich man. He will give you
anything you want if you set me free.”
“Is it?” asked the crocodile.
“Yes,” replied princess Laiamon.
“OK,” said the crocodile, “tell your father to give me a baby to eat every day.”
The crocodile let Laiamon go. Quickly, Laiamon swam to the river bank and went home. She told what
she had experienced to her father. Her father then called his people to discuss what the crocodile had
asked.
The next day, the chief and his people went to the river. They bought a pig for the crocodile.
“Good morning, Crocodile,” said the chief.
“Do you bring a baby for me?” asked the crocodile.
“We have no babies in the village,” said the chief, “we can only give you a pig this time.”
“Don’t lie to me!” the crocodile shanted.
“Of course not. If there is a baby in the village, we will bring it to you. Now, please take this pig.”
“All right,” said the crocodile.
The chief threw the pig into the river. The crocodile quickly ate the pig.
“Hmmm, it’s very delicious!” said the crocodile. Not long after that, this creature’s stomach ached. It
moaned and groaned. Then it died.
“Father, how did you kill the crocodile?” asked Laiamon.
“We have filled the pig with poison,” said the chief. “This creature had killed many people. I’m proud of
you, Laiamon. You could get away from the crocodile. Remember my daughter, if you are brave, you can
beat evil things.”

Timun Emas
Long time ago in the Island of Java, Indonesia, lived a couple of farmer. They had married for some years
but they had no children. So they prayed to a monster called buta Ijo to give them children. Buta Ijo was a
ferocious and powerful monster. He granted their wish on one condition. When their children had grown
up, they had to sacrifice them to Buta Ijo. He liked eating fresh meat of human being. The farmers agreed
to his condition. Several months later the wife was pregnant.
She gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. They named her Timun Emas. The farmers were happy. Timun
Emas was very healthy and a very smart girl. She was also very diligent. When she was a teenager Buta
Ijo came to their house. Timun Emas was frightened so she ran away to hide. The farmers then told Buta
Ijo that Timun Emas was still a child. They asked him to postpone. Buta Ijo agreed. He promised to come
again. The following year Buta Ijo came again. But again and again their parents said that Timun Emas
was still a child.
When the third time Buta Ijo came their parents had prepared something for him. They gave Timun Emas
several bamboo needles, seeds of cucumber, dressing and salt.
“Timun, take these things”
“What are these things?”
“These are your weapons. Buta Ijo will chase you. He will eat you alive. So run as fast as you can. And if
he will catch you spread this to the ground. Now go!”
Timun Emas was scared so she ran as quickly as she could. When Buta Ijo arrived she was far from home.
He was very angry when he realized that his prey had left. So he ran to chase her. He had a sharp nose so
he knew what direction his prey ran.
Timun Emas was just a girl while Buta Ijo was a monster so he could easily catch her up. When he was
just several steps behind Timun Emas quickly spread the seeds of cucumber. In seconds they turned into
many vines of cucumber. The exhausted Buta Ijo was very thirsty so he grabbed and ate them. When Buta
Ijo was busy eating cucumber Timun Emas could run away.
But soon Buta Ijo realized and started running again. When he was just several steps behind Timun Emas
threw her bamboo needles. Soon they turned into dense bamboo trees. Buta Ijo found it hard to pass. It
took him some time to break the dense bamboo forest. Meanwhile Timun Emas could run farther.
Buta Ijo chased her again. When he almost catch her again and again Timun Emas threw her dressing.
This time it turned into a lake. Buta Ijo was busy to save himself so Timun Emas ran way. But Buta Ijo
could overcome it and continued chasing her.
Finally when Timun Emas was almost caught she threw her salt. Soon the land where Buta Ijo stood
turned into ocean. Buta Ijo was drowned and died instantly. Timun Emas was thankful to god and came
back to her home.
