Poem Analysis
I think that the poem that puts women at a disadvantage is the second poem because I
feel that the poem is trying to say that women cannot live without men. As such, in the
first two lines, "For every woman who is tired of having to fake weakness although she
is strong, There's a man who enjoys protecting her in exchange for her submission."
These lines say that women need men for their protection, which I think is incorrect
since it is morally wrong to generalize that women depend on men for protection in
exchange for their submission. Also, it is erroneous to say that women conceal their
strength just because they need men to save them.
I think that the poem that puts men at a disadvantage is the first poem because
although it highlighted both the shortcomings of men and women, the manner in which
the authors portrayed the imperfection of men deemed it to be "tougher" than that of the
women's. But still, I feel that we should not discredit the hardships of men and women
since it is not fair to compare your weakness to others.
Bonino et al. would like to emphasize how society, particularly men, views women in
this day and age. The authors are trying to highlight the occurrences in which awful men
take advantage of women, which is a disheartening reality for some.
I reckon that the first poem is better at challenging gender roles since it highlighted the
weaknesses and flaws of both men and women; I feel that the poem showed
equivalence between the struggle of both gender roles in today's society. The poem
fostered a culture of equality between genders.
We could make the poem better by creating a striking introductory line and ending line
to make up for the constant structure the poem has, which made it monotonous. But
overall, I think that the poem needs minimal changes since it has a clear message and
intention.
