Strain under pure compression in concrete is limited to 0.002
which corresponds to 420 mpa in steel
ductility.
In reinforced concrete structures that are designed to resist
seismic forces, it is common practice to reduce the yield strength
of the reinforcement. This is done to prevent brittle failure
modes in the structure during an earthquake, which can be
catastrophic.
During an earthquake, the structure undergoes cyclic loading
that causes the reinforcement to yield and deform. If the yield
strength of the reinforcement is too high, the deformation can be
sudden and brittle, leading to the sudden failure of the structure.
By reducing the yield strength of the reinforcement, the
deformation becomes more ductile and can absorb more energy,
resulting in a more controlled and less catastrophic failure mode.
The reduction in yield strength is usually achieved by specifying
a lower grade of reinforcement steel or by reducing the stress in
the reinforcement below the yield stress. This design approach is
known as "seismic design philosophy" and is used to ensure that
structures can withstand seismic forces and protect the safety of
the occupants.
