Binomial Expansion

Expand.

(a + b)0 =

(a + b)1 =

(a + b)2 =

(a + b)3 =

(a + b)4 =

Three patterns emerge:

 Decreasing powers of the first term

 Increasing powers of the second term

 A set of coefficients that has special importance.

NOTE: The coefficients can be found using Pascal’s triangle.

Find the first four terms and the general term of the following.

a) (x + 1)6

b) (2 + ax)7

c) (1 – 2x)5
Binomial Expansion
Find the term independent of x in the expansion of (x2 + 2/x)6

Find the coefficient of x3y3 in the expansion of (x + 3y)6

Find the coefficient of x4y3 in the expansion of (x + y)(x + 3y)6

9. a) 23 C5 b) 23C5 – (10C5 x 13C0) - (10C0 x 13C5)

10 a) 6x7x7x7 b) fill the picky people first 6x6x5x4

c) Now there are two picky spots. The first can’t be zero, the last spot must be 0, 4, 8
Let’s assume we MUST put the zero at the end. 6x7x7x3
d) 6x7x7x1
