Graphing Sinusoidal Functions (sine and cosine curves)

Summary:
for sinusoidal functions with equation of the form

y=asin (k ( x−d ))+c

y=a cos(k ( x−d ))+c
a vertical stretch or compression or reflection
|a| = amplitude = (max-min)/2
if a < 0 then the graph is reflected vertically

k horizontal stretch or compression (or reflection, but rarely

used)
(known as angular frequency)
the relationship between k and the period is:
k = number of periods in 2π [k = 2π/p & p = 2π/k]

d horizontal shift a.k.a. phase shift (degrees)

be sure to factor out the k first!

c vertical shift = (max+min)/2

Graphing Sinusoidal Functions (sine and cosine curves)

1) Discuss the transformations of the graph of y=3 sin ⁡(4 x). Use your calculator
to check.

Amplitude is 3

Period is 2π/4 = π / 2

No horizontal shift

No vertical shift

2) y=cos ((x−π /2) ) +2

Amplitude is 1

Period is 2π/1 = 2π

horizontal shift right π/2

vertical shift up 2

3) y=−2sin ¿ ¿

Amplitude is 2

Vertical flip in the x-axis

Period is 2π/2 = π

horizontal shift left π/12 (notice you need to factor out the 2)

vertical shift down 1

Inverse Trig functions

y = sin-1 x

the restriction is -π/2 ≤ y ≤ π/2

(or the first and fourth quadrants of the unit circle).

y = cos-1 x

the restriction is 0 ≤ y ≤ π

(or the first and second quadrants of the unit circle).

y = tan-1 x

the restriction is -π/2 < y < π/2

(or the first and fourth quadrants of the unit circle).

Ex. Give the exact value of the following.

a) sin-1 ( -1/2) = - π / 6

b) sin-1 ( -1) = - π / 2

c) cos-1 ( -1/2) = - π / 3

d) sin-1 ( 1/2) = π / 6

e) tan-1 (-1/√ 3) = - π / 6

I hope this helps.
