Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji,

the presiding Pontiff and the 36th in the line of Jagadgurus of the
celebrated Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetam is a saint par excellence and
a sage beyond compare.

With His incarnation in 1951 into a family of Vedic scholars as a result of great penance of His parents,
Sri Seetharama Anjaneyalu (the purvashrama or pre-sanyasa name of name of His Holiness) was
renowned for His strict dharmic ways of life, deep devotion to God and uncompromising desire for
scriptural learning, even as a young boy.

In 1966, the illustrious brahmachari left home once and for all, reached Ujjain, where His Guru Sri
Abhinava Vidyatheertha Mahaswamiji, the 35th Pontiff of Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetam was then
camping, and surrendered unto the great Guru. He served the sacred feet of His Guru for about eight
years. Renouncing the world in 1974 and embracing Sanyasa, He was blessed with the opportunity to
continue to be under the divine care and guidance of His holy Guru for about 15 years. With His
ascension to the throne of Transcendental Wisdom in 1989 as the 36 th Jagadguru Shankaracharya

கருட கமன தவ, சரண கமல மிஹ, மனஸி லஸது மம நித்யம் |

மம தாபம பாகுரு தேவ, மம பாபம பாகுரு தேவ ||
ஜலஜ நயன விதி, நமுசி ஹரண முக, விபூத வினுத பத பத்ம |
மம தாபம பாகுரு தேவ, மம பாபம பாகுரு தேவ ||
புஜக ஷயன பவ, மதன ஜனக மம, ஜனன மரண பய ஹாரி |
மம தாபம பாகுரு தேவ, மம பாபம பாகுரு தேவ ||
ஷங்க சக்ர தர, துஷ்ட தைத்ய ஹர, ஸர்வ லோக சரண |
மம தாபம பாகுரு தேவ, மம பாபம பாகுரு தேவ ||
அகணித குண கண, அஷரண ஷரணத, விதலித சுரரிபு ஜால |
மம தாபம பாகுரு தேவ, மம பாபம பாகுரு தேவ ||
பக்த வர்ய்ய மிஹ, பூரி கருணயா, பாஹி பாரதி தீர்த்தம் |
மம தாபம பாகுரு தேவ, மம பாபம பாகுரு தேவ ||
கருட கமன தவ, சரண கமல மிஹ, மனஸி லஸது மம நித்யம் |
மம தாபம பாகுரு தேவ, மம பாபம பாகுரு தேவ ||
 Garuḍa-gamana = Oh (God), who travels on Garuda;
 tava = your;
 caraṇa-kamalam = lotus feet;
 iha = here
 (mama) manasi = in my mind
 lasatu = let (it) shine;
 nityam = always;

 mama = my;
 tāpam = sufferings;
 apākuru = remove;
This second line repeats in all stanzas -
 deva = O God; Oh God please remove all my sufferings,
 mama = my; Oh God please remove all my sins.
 pāpam = sins;
 apākuru = remove;
 deva = O God;

Oh Lord Vishnu, the one who travels on Garuda, let your Lotus-like feet Bless and shine on
my mind daily (everyday). Oh God, please get rid of all my sufferings and remove all my sins
and its effects.

ஜலஜ நயன விதி, நமுசி ஹரண முக, விபூத வினுத பத பத்ம |

மம தாபம பாகுரு தேவ, மம பாபம பாகுரு தேவ ||

 Jalaja-nayana = O (God), whose eyes are like lotus

 vidhi = Brahma
 namuci-haraṇa = Indra, the killer of Namuci
 mukha = starting with;
 vibudha = numerous learned ones
 vinuta = that is worshipped by;
 pada-padma = O (God), who has lotus feet;

Oh Lord Mahavishnu, God with eyes like lotus, whose lotus-like feet are worshipped by
Gods like Bhramma, Lord Indra – the killer of demon Namuchi, Shiva – who removed the
head of thdemon Namuchi and who is also worshipped by Great and Learned people. Oh
God, please get rid (remove) of all my sufferings and sins.
புஜக ஷயன பவ, மதன ஜனக மம, ஜனன மரண பய ஹாரி |
மம தாபம பாகுரு தேவ, மம பாபம பாகுரு தேவ ||

 bhujaga-śayana = Oh (God), whose bed is the serpent;

 bhava = Become
 madana-janaka = Oh (God), the father of Kaama;
 mama = my;
 janana-maraṇa = of life and death;
 bhaya-hārī = dispeller of the fear;

Oh Lord Vishnu, the one who sleeps on the magnificent snake – Adishesha; and the one
who is the father of Kaama (Manmadhan), the great one who completely dispels the fear of
birth-death cycle from all. Oh God, please get rid (remove) of all my sufferings and sins.

ஷங்க சக்ர தர, துஷ்ட தைத்ய ஹர, ஸர்வ லோக சரண |

மம தாபம பாகுரு தேவ, மம பாபம பாகுரு தேவ ||

 śaṅkha-cakra-dhara = Oh (God), who adorns the conch and the disc;

 duṣṭa-daitya-hara = Oh (God), the destroyer of the wicked Asuras;
 sarva-loka-śaraṇa = Oh (God), the sole refuge for the entire world;

Oh Mahavishnu, who carries a conch and chakra in His hands, the brave Lord who
destroyed the evil and demonic asuras who troubled mankind & nature, The one who is the
sole refugee for the entire universe. Oh God, please get rid (remove) of all my sufferings
and sins.

அகணித குண கண, அஷரண ஷரணத, விதலித சுரரிபு ஜால |

மம தாபம பாகுரு தேவ, மம பாபம பாகுரு தேவ ||

 agaṇita-guṇa-gaṇa = Oh (God), who possesses a collection of innumerable good

qualities
 aśaraṇa-śaraṇada = Oh (God), who is the giver of protection, to those without any
refuge
 vidalita-sura-ripu-jāla = Oh (God), who destroyed the collection of Asuras, the
enemies of the Devas
Oh Great Vishnu, the one with innumerable and immeasurable good qualities, the
protector of those who are without any protection (Anaadha-rakshaka), who by tricks and
play easily destroy all the enemies of Devas. Oh God, please get rid (remove) of all my
sufferings and sins.

பக்த வர்ய்ய மிஹ, பூரி கருணயா, பாஹி பாரதி தீர்த்தம் |

மம தாபம பாகுரு தேவ, மம பாபம பாகுரு தேவ ||

 bhakta-varyam = who is a principal devotee;

 iha = here
 bhūri-karuṇayā = with overwhelming compassion;
 pāhi = You protect;
 bhāratītīrtham = Sri Bharati Tirtha Swami

Oh Mahavishnu, The most merciful and Kind God, Please protect Bharathi Theertha – the
principal devotee. Oh God, please get rid (remove) of all my sufferings and sins.
