PROPOSAL

To begin, my idea rests upon the basis of animatic cgi, id like my documentary to be
on the evolution of cgi within animation. I have chosen this as it is a subject of
interest and I believe i can make it in a way that will be of interest to those viewing it.
It also correlates to the course in many aspects and even potential future courses i
might choose. I intend to make my documentary specifically targeted in the
animation usage region, delving into cgi’s major growth and development in the
media sector and how it has impacted the animated industry.

For the beginning segment of my documentary. I intend to just include a big text slide
saying cgi and then sequences of clips in short bursts of shows or films that have
used it to grab viewership attention. I plan on doing my project mainly on premiere
pro but could potentially be exploring software such as blender etc. following the
clips, I'll give a very brief history of CGI, with the focus being the beginning and it's
first usage, then it's modern usage and effectiveness. In between i will explore only a
FEW major brake throughs as to not go off topic or make it disinteresting. Following
this part i will proceed with an interview of undecided length, this will be entailing
questions such as :
How has cgi impacted the animation industry
Has it overall had a better or worse impact
Where is it heading in terms of development and usage

I plan to interview a few cgi japanese animators if i am enabled to make contact with
them in time via twitter, however as i am aware they are blatantly busy individuals so
if they are not able to answer within a week from the 14th i will be asking trevor as to
not be leaving it too late. I intend to use premiere, potentially blender, and even after
effects. These will be used for MY custom example. I will be attempting to attain an
audio file which will be used for the interview amongst overlaying footage with
potential information on the subject matter over the top of the sequence. With my
documentary i would like to explore the pros and the cons of cgi usage within
animation as a heavy topic. I intend to have it almost as an inside debate with the
goal of ascertaining weather cgi usage in animation is having a better or worse effect
on the audience as a whole.

My goal is to explore specific examples such as Arcane, and i will ensure i am

getting by interviewees contextual opinion on the subject matter AS WELL as the
broader population. I would like to find out how someone who has worked in the field
feels their answer is suitable and why they said this. Using the specific example will
be useful in the generalised impact of the documentary as it is extremely well known
and contextually fits in very well. It will be easy to gather information on the subject
as it is a modern piece.

Main direction: Overall has cgi had a more positive or negative impact in animation
Based on my developments as of the last time writing i will be moving to interviewing
trevor and robert(lecturers) instead. I will now outline the specifics of my project.

To begin the Documentary, i will open the sequence with a set of footage for each
subect area, the first being animation and the second being cgi. The reason i will be
seperating these at the beginning is because it is important to explore the
individuality of both cgi and animation so we can explain why they are used as a
combination and why it seems to impact the industry of animation im such a vivid
way. After the footage i will explain what each of those two categories are, keeping it
simple and easy to understand. I will also have examples playing beneath to further
demonstrate the examples. Following the explanation of the two subject areas i will
be presenting questions that may arise when considering the usage of cgi within
animation. These questions will be mostly rhetorical as i intend to have more specific
questions for my interview later on in the documentary. These questions will give the
viewer an idea of the topic for the documentary presenting it as a sort of debate
between the overall positive aspect of using cgi in animation and the overall negative
impact of using cgi within animation.

After the questions have been layed out i will dismiss them in a light manner which
will allow them to ponder the questions while i move on breifly to discussing a small
history segment regarding the history of cgi animations. I will begin THIS segment by
outlining the difficulties in pointing out one set beginning of cgi usage and particularly
in an animation format. Following this i will give my researched take on the beginning
and uprising of it within the feild of media. I will use my reaearch to give an example
of very early usage and overlay footage of the example for visual representation.
Alongside the beginning and uprising i will also delve into how it was used and the
methods behind making it possible to begin with. I will attempt to make this section
interesting.
After this section i will then move on to modern cgi usage in animation. I have
decided for my example of research i will be using the famous franchise arcane as it
is well received in the community and popular meaning its more likely that my
explanations will be understood. I will ensure that the shows cgi usage is presented
visually enough to leave the viewers with an understanding that it is not just 2d work.
I will explain how the production of a show in this scale using cgi is important and
talk about the art director and his methods for the visual direction.

It will be addressed how cgi has actually managed to do some major good for the
animation industry particularly considering how all of the underlying content is
rendered in 3D prior to its compositing. Going back to the history segment. My
example will most likely be the film vertigo and my research and example will be
regarding this.
I would like to address how the usage of cgi within animation is a heavy and
subjective area and is very prone to personal bias, this is important to discuss in the
documentary as it is fundamental in the generalised positive to negative impact on
cgi usage in animation. It can affect the market and sales, and this will be brought up
later in regards to one of the answers to an interview question.

With the interview i will be using trevor and rob as my interviewees as they both have
experience in the field of gci and animation. The reason i have chosen both of these
people is because they both have the set of skills signature to one another. Trevor
specialises in animation and Rob in 3D. These two will work well with regards to
intertwining the questions. For example i will be asking Trevor for his opinion and
thoughts of the usage of cgi in animation. This question is majorly opinionated for its
response and as an avid animation watcher and subject teacher it will play into the
whole topical value for the documentary. The idea being that from his perspective it
will be more animation centred rather than cgi focused due to his knowledge of
course being mainly of that in animation. This will equate for example to a more non
biased perspective for the topic while still having expertise in the content production.
With Robs questions they will be more direct towards the development of cgi more
specifically and how he believes it has been used and how he feels it will progress in
future. This is important and relevant because it will also come hand in hand with the
usage of chi in animation. Exploring how cgi will develop allows us to speculate the
more plausible usages within animations in a technical sense.

With my example i was initially planning to produce my own model and rig it but due
to time constraints and my perfectionist nature i will simply be taking a pre existing
3D model with a flat base and using it to draw an overlay of art. This is my choice of
example as it is the method which arcane used for its production, using 3D models
and animatic sequences whilst having animators composite and touch up the stylism
of each scene with texture and art over the top. So this is why i will be drawing jinx
from Arcane in a moderately similar style to that of the show, however with my own
artistic take. This is a prime example of how cgi can be used within animation and it
also visually represents how beneficial it can be to use 3D cgi elements to increase
the quality of a product or to make the process far more efficient and cost effective.
