Proposal

For my specialist documentary project, I have decided to talk about the specialist subject
called stop motion. Although I haven't been directly taught every technique of how to
produce a stop motion animation at Poole college, I feel quite confident that I can make a
decent stop motion animation. For my final major project, I chose the technique of stop
motion to show the life cycle of a butterfly. During the process of coming up with my final
major project Idea I did both primary and secondary research about the topic. I feel that
because of my previous research into the stop motion technique, I would benefit and feel
more comfortable with the production of my documentary being about stop motion
animation. I feel that basing this project on stop motion animation I could get a chance to
produce a documentary that I am both happy and proud of and know that I made it to the
best of my ability. Therefore, I would like my specialist documentary to be based on stop
motion as I already have both an interest and common understanding of the technique.
In my documentary I would like to discuss the history of stop motion animation. This will
include information about who invented stop motion and when and the definition of stop
motion. My documentary will include examples of the four types of stop motion animations
which are 1) Lego and action figures 2) Claymation 3) Cut-out 4) Silhouette.

I would like to highlight the equipment used to make a stop motion, this may include
camera, a rostrum, a tripod, editing software or apps, a three-point lighting set up or any
lighting in general, clay or plasticine, props, Lego, puppets, action figures, coloured paper
utensil to make clay or plasticine figures. I will use pictures of the equipment from the
internet or from photos I will take of equipment we may have already at the college.
My documentary will include my previous stop motion animation footage that I both filmed
and edited. I plan to include behind the scenes footage of the making of stop motions this
might include the production morph and Wallis and Gromit as they are both examples of
stop motion animation which I like. I plan to include behind the scenes photos from when I
made my final major project.

During my interview about stop motion I plan to ask some questions. For example, a
question I might ask is “How do you think technology has improved within stop motion
animation?” or “What is the first stop motion animation that you remember watching?”.
Another question I could potentially ask during the interview is “What is your favourite
example of a stop motion animation and explain why?” or “Do you think stop motion
animation will continue to be popular form of animation in the future, if so, why?” or “What
is your favourite software used to edit stop motion?”.
