What have the first few days at high school been like for you?
Your teacher will read a text in which you will discover that there are many people who
feel the same way.
1. Your teacher will read the text three times. The first time you hear it, listen
carefully to get a general idea of what the text is about.
4. After the third reading, you should be ready to answer the questions.
Questions:
4.1 List four problems Grade 8s face when they arrive at high school.
4.2 What does it mean “to feel like a small fish in a big pond”?
4.3 What does the writer suggest you do if you are feeling overwhelmed?
4.4 Mention two things you can do to avoid feeling lost in high school.
4.5 What is one of the biggest differences between grade 7 and Grade 8?
4.6 Mention two ways in which you can organise your day.
The first day of primary school is a little scary, but it is also fun and exciting. The first day
of high school, on the other hand, is often just plain terrifying.
No longer the cute little child filled with enthusiasm, you now face a myriad of problems
from bad hair and an unattractively oversized school uniform to overwhelming corridors
and strange rules about which grass you may and may not walk across.
One of the most challenging aspects of going into high school can be the feeling that
you are now a small fish in a big pond. Just remember that you have a right to be in
the pond!
The quickest way to overcome feeling small is to get involved. The more you involve
yourself in the activities the school has to offer, the more quickly you’ll feel at home.
You may also be feeling lost. Everyone feels lost when they first come to high school
and it really is okay to ask for help. Get a map of the school and highlight all the places
that are important to you.
The workload increases from grade seven to grade eight, so get organized. Use a
homework diary and pack your school bookbag before you go to bed at night.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. There’ll probably be ten other kids in the class just as
confused as you, who were too afraid to ask the question themselves.
