CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

1.1 Introduction

The older persons serves as the bridge of the legacies of one

generation to another. Anything that good society enjoys today reflects the
goodness of the humanity the older persons have nurtured during their time.
Respect for the elderly has always been the mark of Asian societies like
ours. We put a high premium on preserving the dignity of our older person
and put them in a dignified place in society. As a person become older there
are notable changes in both their physical and mental characteristics. These
changes are of varying degree and are related to a mixture of factors. The
effects of these changes results in the aged having to adjust their lifestyles’
and at times the location where they reside. These sudden or gradual
adjustments to their lives are at times disconcerting and result in dismay in
the aged person.

Today, our country is competing to be better than the other country.

Striving to become an industrialized country without noticing our population
growth that can generate economic growth as it causes more demand for
products and also leads us to lack of space needed for living. A lot of poor
Filipino can’t have the standard of living, people who can’t afford their needs
for living. One of the cases are those elderly abandoned by their families
and living in streets without having their needs they should have for their
living.

As the aging population increases, the higher demand for health

services. Older people suffer from both degenerative and communicable
diseases due to the ageing of the body’s immune system. The leading
causes of morbidity are infections, while visual impairment, difficulty in

walking, chewing, hearing, osteoporosis, arthritis and incontinence are

other common health-related problems.

1.2 Background of the Study

Recreation plays a key role in the well-being of older adults and in

enhancing their quality of life. Participating in recreational activities can
serve a variety of needs for seniors and also for individuals of all ages.
Increased health and fitness, opportunities for social interaction, the use of
skills and talents developed over a lifetime, and the acquisition of new
capabilities are just a some of the significant advantages of recreation for
the senior population.

For elders who recently went through a major procedure or live alone
at their homes while their children are living elsewhere, it gets difficult to
manage themselves emotionally and also becomes challenging to carry out
even the smallest of tasks. Hence, indulging in physical activities not only
improves functioning but also improves the mental health in older adults.
Along with improving physical health, it also extends their lives. Another key
to increased longevity is keeping a close circle of friends with whom they
can share laughs.

One of the main issue is the health status of the elderly. As people
age, their body health status are changing, which can reduce their resistant
to chronic, devastating, and disabling conditions. Consequently, chronic
illnesses and disabilities are more likely to affect the elderly. There is a
higher need for appropriate policies and legislative efforts to improve the
welfare of the elderly due to the increased awareness of the needs and
concerns of the aged.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

The problems for this study included four major problems and
four minor problems which were structured to further offer insights to
the major problem.

1.3.1 Major Problems

1. What will be the design planning of the project that will

achieve organized circulations of the spaces of the development?

2. How are the characteristics of the leisure of recreational

space defined in the domain of interior architecture?

3. What are the following possible activities and program that

the project can offer inside recreational facility?

4. Will the users feel secure of themselves in this kind of

approach?

1.3.2 Minor Problems

1. What would be the best building style that will suit the
project?

2. What are the required facilities of the project?

3. What materials should be used for the facilities to lessen

construction and maintenance costs?

4. What are the aspects to consider in maximizing the use of

natural ventilation and cooling?

1.4 Significance of the Study

Through this study, the proposed recreational center for the elderly
can benefit the following:

The elderly, through improvement of their health and fitness,

as well as opportunities for socializing, for using skills and talents
developed throughout their lifetime, and for learning new skills.
Moreover, as they believe it is all from aging, getting them
engaged in physical activities is more challenging. And that can help
them escape the cycles of loneliness and isolation. Not only does
physical activity improve the quality of life, but also its span. So, once
an individual gets older, bones can get brittle, muscles are prone to
shortening, and even balance and coordination can start to
decrease.
This study will also introduce a new concept in designing a
recreational and entertainment center. This will also serve as an eye
opener to the aged people to acknowledge the concept of the
structure that will adapt the culture of the place.

1.5 Goals and Objectives

This study aims to provide the senior individuals a well-equipped and

accessible recreational facility that will satisfy their needs and help each
senior citizens live as comfortably, safely and independently as possible.

1.5.1. Objectives

To be able to design a recreational center that will give enough space

and soothing ambiance for the elderly.

5|P age
AKAY: A Proposed Recreational and home care facility for the Aged in Baguio City, Benguet
Philippines

To properly locate the public and private areas within the project to
avoid user conflict.

To help the elderly to maintain or regain the optimum level of

physical, mental and emotional well-being and to prevent or delay the onset
of illness.

To ensure better health for senior citizens through the provision of

focused service delivery packages and integrated continuum of quality care
in various settings.

To develop patient-centered and environment standards to ensure

safety and accessibility of all health facilities for the senior citizens.

1.6 Scope and Limitations

The study focuses on the proposed recreational which includes

physical, environmental, social and economic aspect of the project.

This study comprises the following:

1. Architectural Planning and Design

2. Structural innovation

3. Site Planning

4. Economic Feasibility Study of Project

5. Project Cost and Return of Investment

The Scopes of the development of the project are the following:

1. Commercial Area

2. Office Building

3. Activity Area

6|P age

Philippines

4. Parking Area

5. Interactive Spaces

6. Green spaces

7. Residential Spaces

Delimitations

This study was limited on details regarding engineering works such

as detailed mechanical, electrical, structural, seismic analysis on the
reaction of the structure to earthquake, plumbing, sanitary designs, and
specifications writing of materials used unless supporting details were
provided to support the design concept.

1.6 Definition of Terms

Elderly - commonly measured by chronological age and, as a convention,

a person aged 65 years or more is often referred to as 'elderly'.

Recreation - refreshment by means of some pastime, agreeable exercise,

or the like. A pastime, diversion, exercise, or other resource affording

Research Generation

The researcher was able to gather data by using a variety of persons

and organizations regarding the project's profile and space needs. Site
inspection through research was done to evaluate the location's suitability
for the project and its physical state. This is necessary so that researchers
can determine what the proposed recreational center requires. In order to
understand more about the location, the researcher also conducted
interviews with local residents.

Library Research

A few books that pertain to the project were used by the researcher
to conduct study. These published sources are connected to the project that
is being proposed. The researcher is helped in minimizing the planned
project by a number of case studies, related publications, theses, and
magazines that provide data and information.

Internet

The researcher was helped in finding relevant literature and case

studies for the suggested project by using the internet, which is the most
cutting-edge and contemporary method of searching. The researcher
looked at a lot of websites that were relevant to the planned recreational
center.
