English Highway Episode 35 (# 352)

NED Of course, the car breaks down just when I’m in a hurry. I’ll have to make up
a story to explain why I’m late.
TODD I’m almost done. I can’t give up. I can do this. I once fixed an old car.
NED But this is a new car. You have to keep up with the technology.
TODD What is this? I know I jotted it down somewhere. I’ve got it! A car is very
complex. You need to follow the instructions carefully. In fact... Of course!
Here are my notes! I’ve just mixed up two parts. This goes here. And that
goes there.
NED You made that up.
TODD No, I didn’t. See? It’s written right here.
NED This is a grocery receipt. You don’t have any idea what you’re doing, do you?
TODD No. But as I said, it’s very complicated.
NED Back up a second. That should do it.
TODD That’s too easy. This was a set up, wasn’t it?

LOOK &
LISTEN
TODD Hi, Cindy. Why are you getting made up?
CINDY I’m going out with Mack.
TODD I like dressing up.
CINDY But it’s so hard to keep up with the latest fashion.
TODD My favorite store just closed down. Last month they opened up. This month
they shut down. Okay, let me see your new look. I like it.

RIGHT WAY
CINDY He reads do-it-yourself books, doesn’t he?
MACK He buys them, but he doesn’t read them.
CINDY He doesn’t know much about ovens, does he?
MACK No, he doesn’t know anything about ovens.
CINDY He’s not going to blow us up, right?
NED Thanks, guys.

SURVIVAL
ENGLISH
CINDY Is it fixed yet?
MACK No, it’s not fixed yet.
CINDY Okay, well, keep me posted.
MACK You need any more tools?
NED No, I’m okay.
MACK All right, well, keep me posted if you need anything.
NED Ok. I’ll keep you posted.

STREET TALK
CINDY I think Todd likes fixing things because it makes him feel useful. Now, I
wonder why everything in the house always seems to be broken.
NED I didn’t give up. I fixed up both the car and the oven. Now we’re all good.
TODD So long as you don’t have to cook or drive anywhere.
NED That’s fine. I’m trying to cut down.
