Subject Code:2941902 Date:03/01/2022
Subject Name:Dynamics of machinery
Time:02:30 PM to 05:00 PM Total Marks: 70
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.
4. Simple and non-programmable scientific calculators are allowed.

Q.1 (a) The length of the crank and connecting rod are 150 mm and 600 mm 07
respectively in a slider crank mechanism. The crank position is 60° from the
inner dead centre. The crank shaft speed is 450 rpm (CW). Using analytical
method, determine: (i) Velocity and acceleration of the slider, and (ii) Angular
velocity and angular acceleration of the connecting rod.
(b) With the help of a turning moment diagram, explain the maximum fluctuation 07
of energy and coefficient of fluctuation of energy.
Q.2 (a) Explain the process of balancing of a single rotating mass by two masses 07
rotating in different planes.
(b) A 4 cylinder in-line engine has cranks placed at 90° angular interval. Length of 07
connecting rod is 560 mm and crank radius is 140 mm. The mass of the
reciprocating parts of each cylinder is 20 kg. The engine rotates at 600 rpm.
The cylinders are spaced 300 mm apart. Find the primary unbalanced forces
and couples acting on the reciprocating parts.
OR
(b) Describe the method for balancing of radial engines. 07
Q.3 (a) Derive the natural frequency relationship for the torsional pendulum with 07
standard notations.
(b) A uniform disc of diameter 300 mm and of mass 5 kg is mounted on one end of 07
an arm of length 600 mm. The other end of the arm is free to rotate in a
universal bearing. If the disc rotates about the arm with a speed of 300 rpm
clockwise, looking from the front, with what speed will it precess about the
vertical axis?
OR
Q.3 (a) Explain the effect of gyroscopic couple on a naval ship during steering. 07
(b) A mass of body of free-damped system is 16 kg which makes 45 oscillations in 07
27 seconds. The amplitude of free vibration decreases to one-fourth of the
initial value after 5 complete oscillations. Determine (i) logarithmic decrement
(ii) damping factor (iii) stiffness and (iv) damping coefficient of the system.
Q.4 (a) Discuss about the vibration isolation and force transmissibility. List out the 07
different types of vibration isolating materials used with their characteristics.

1
(b) Discuss about (i) over damping (ii) critical damping and (iii) under damping. 07
Also draw the plots of amplitude versus time for the different damping
conditions.
OR
Q.4 (a) Derive the equation for length of the torsionally equivalent shaft. 07
(b) In a single degree viscously damped vibrating system, the suspended mass of 07
85 kg elongates spring by 18 mm. A dashpot is provided which reduces the
amplitude to 25 % of its initial value in two complete oscillations.
Determine: (i) Stiffness of the spring (ii) Logarithmic decrement (iii) Damping
factor (iv) Damping coefficient and (vi) periodic time of damped vibrations.
Q.5 (a) A shaft 40 mm diameter and 2.5 m long is simply supported at the ends carries 07
three rotors of mass 90 kg, 140 kg and 60 kg at 0.8 m, 1.5 m and 2 m from the
left support. The modulus of elasticity of the shaft material is 2×105 MPa.
