WORKSHEET 5: Classifying Kinetic and Potential Energy

Name________________________________Year and Section___________________ Score____________________

Teacher______________________________ School___________________________________Date_____________
Objective: Identify and describe the different types of energy in real life scenarios.
BIG IDEA
 Potential energy is the stored energy of position possessed by an object.
 Gravitational potential energy is the energy stored in an object as the result of its vertical position or height. The
energy is stored as the result of the gravitational attraction of the Earth for the object.
 Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. An object that has motion - whether it is vertical or horizontal motion -
has kinetic energy.

I. DIRECTIONS: Take a look at the pictures, label them as Kinetic or Potential Energy based on what type of energy they
are showing. Just write KE or PE on the blank provided.

II. DIRECTIONS: Examine the diagram below then answer the following questions. Write only the letter of the correct
answer on the blank provided each item.

_____ 1. Which point in the roller coaster has the highest point the car has maximum GPE? It is stopped so KE is zero.
_____ 2. Which point in the roller coaster has the driving force does work on the car and increases its GPE?
_____ 3. Which point in the roller coaster that the car has enough KE to continue up the next slope?
_____ 4. Which point in the roller coaster that GPE is transferred to KE and the car speeds up?
_____ 5. Which point in the roller coaster go back at the lowest point – maximum KE and GPE = 0?
