Course Description:
Algebra I is the first course in three required high school courses designed to ensure career and
college readiness. The course represents a discrete study of algebra with correlated statistics
applications.

Course Competencies/ Learning Targets

Students who successfully complete Algebra I will be competent in the following areas:
● Students will interpret the structure of expressions and solve problems related to unit analysis.

● Students will address properties of rational and irrational numbers and operations with
polynomials in preparation for working with quadratic functions later in the course.

● Students will analyze linear functions only.

o Students will (1) investigate key features of graphs; (2) create, solve, and model graphically
linear equations and inequalities in one and two variables; (3) create, solve, and model
graphically systems of linear equations in two variables; (4) create and interpret systems of
inequalities where applicable; for example, students will create a system to define the
domain of a particular situation, such as a situation limited to the first quadrant; the focus is
not on solving systems of inequalities; (5) rearrange formulas to highlight a quantity of
interest; (6) recognize arithmetic sequences as linear functions.

● Students will analyze quadratic functions only.

o Students will (1) investigate key features of graphs; (2) solve quadratic equations by taking
square roots, factoring (x2 + bx + c AND ax2 + bx + c), completing the square, and using
the quadratic formula; (3) compare and contrast graphs in standard, vertex, and intercept
forms. Students will only work with real number solutions.

● Students will analyze exponential functions only.

o Students will (1) investigate key features of graphs; (2) create, solve, and model graphically
exponential equations; (3) recognize geometric sequences as exponential functions.

● Students will compare and contrast this unit's linear, quadratic, and exponential functions.

● Students will summarize, represent, and interpret data on a single count or measurement variable.

o Students will summarize, represent, and interpret data on two categorical and quantitative
variables.
o Students will interpret linear models.

Student Evaluation
The grading system for Henry County School System:
40% practice grades (Quizzes, Classwork, A: 90 or Above
Homework) B: 80 - 89
40% assessment grades (Summative C: 74 - 79
assessments and projects if applicable) D: 70 - 73
20% Semester final exam/EOC (Given in F: Below 70
December for 1st semester and May for 2nd
semester)

Classroom Expectations
1. NO Cell Phones, smart watches, headphones, or any other misuse of electronic devices.
2. Students will come to class on time prepared and ready to learn.
3. Students will complete all assignments, including homework and projects, by the given deadlines. If a
student is absent, it is the student's responsibility to get any missed assignments. If the absence is
excused, students will have the same number of days to turn in the assignment as they missed.
4. All students will be respectful to other students in class.
5. The teachers and students will work together for a respectful, safe classroom.
6. Participation in class discussions will enhance all students’ learning experiences and help you better
understand the material.
7. Students are expected to have all assignments completed by the due date as set by the teacher.

Four Step Disciplinary Progression:

1. Verbal Warning
2. Parent Contact
3. Parent Teacher Conference
4. Office Referral

Class Supplies
- Scientific Calculator - Prefer Casio if possible
- Notebook/Binder, paper, pencil
- Two Pocket Folder
- Headphones or EarBuds for Classroom Computer use ONLY when instructed by a teacher!!!
- Graph paper - will be provided if needed

Late Assignments
If a student is absent from class, it is their responsibility to inquire about missing assignments.
Students will have a total of 3 school days to submit missing assignments. After the 3rd day, the
assignment will no longer be accepted and the student will receive a grade of zero for that assignment
(For example, if the assignment was given on Monday, the student will have until Friday of that same
week to submit the assignment for it to be considered for grading. After Friday, the assignment would no
be longer accepted). There is also a 10% daily deduction for each day the assignment is late.

3
Assessments and Retakes
Assessments will be given at the end of each unit and/or halfway point of each Unit. Your Summative
Assessment grade can replace any practice grades from that Unit (if they are lower - Maximum of a 70).
There will also be retakes offered for each summative assessment (not the Midterm or Semester Exam).
In order to “qualify” for the retake, the following steps MUST be taken:
- Students MUST correctly complete test corrections for the test.
- Students will also receive extra points for doing test corrections.
- 5 points for doing corrections if scoring a 75 or higher (maximum score
of 100 before Extra Credit is added)
- 30% of points back if a student scores 74 or less
- The parent or guardian of the student MUST contact the teacher to request or
acknowledge that the student wants a retake.
- Please have the parent email the teacher
- The student MUST complete a tutoring session with a math teacher OR a peer tutor
Once a student has completed all three requirements, they qualify to take a retake which will be given
on a designated date. The teacher will select and let students know the date AT LEAST one week in
advance. Retake grades can NOT replace practice work grades.

The retake grade will replace the original unit assessment grade if it is higher than the original test. If the
retake grade is lower, it will be averaged with the original grade (your grade will drop if you score
lower).

The Midterm grade will NOT replace any grades and CANNOT be retaken. The Final Semester Exam
can replace the midterm grade ONLY if it is higher.

Plagiarism, Cheating, and Academic Integrity

Cheating is defined as the giving or receiving of illegal help on anything that has been determined by the
teacher to be an individual effort. It is considered a serious offense and will significantly affect your
course grade. Please refer to the Student Code of Conduct booklet for additional information.

Methodology
A combination of lectures, class discussions, presentations, videos, cooperative learning, and
problem-based learning will be used in this course. Grades will be determined by the satisfactory and
timely completion of assignments.
