1. In consonance with the celebration of the Reading Month, the Annual Revitalized
Competition in English(RACE) this school year 2022-2023, which focuses on the division
theme, “Bawat Bata Bumabasa: Addressing the Reading Gaps in the Next Normal “,will be
held through blended modality on November 26,2022, at 7:30 a.m. at the SDO Conference
Hall.

2. Furthermore, all schools are enjoined to conduct different activities within the Reading
Month which will trigger and instill in the mind and heart of the learners, love for reading.

3. Enclosed are the General and Specific Guidelines of the Competition, Criteria for Judging
the different categories, Schedule of Activities and Technical Working Group.

4. Public Schools District Supervisors, Elementary and Secondary School Heads, District
English Coordinators, Master Teachers and Teacher-Officers of ASET with specific
assignments are requested to attend the finalization meeting on October 20, Thursday at
6 :30 p.m. via Google Meet. The link shall be posted in the different GCs of English.

5. Principals, teachers and SDO personnel who will be serving on the said date which falls
on a Saturday shall be given 1-day service credit or compensatory time-off, whichever is
applicable.

6. The usual support of all concerned is strongly desired.

GENERAL GUIDELINES OF THE COMPETITION
 
1.All contestants are currently enrolled in their respective level; they should present their
IDs/Certificate of enrolment signed by the principal upon registration.

2. There shall be one contestant in every district (7 districts) for Grades III & IV- Creative
Story Reading, Grades V & VI- Declamation. 
3. There shall be one contestant in every public secondary school for Grades 7 & 8-Draw and
Tell, Grades 9 & 10- Spoken Word Poetry, and one team with 5- 7 members for Grades 11 &12-
Film Trailer Contest.
4.Top three previous winners of the individual contests are no longer allowed to join the same
categories. However, they are allowed to compete in other categories.
5.The coach/trainer/consultant of the contestants should be an English teacher from the public
School. 
6.Contestants who will be 5-minute late from the start of the contest (in his/her category) will
have a 5-point deduction from his total score. 
7.The competition shall be judged by 3 judges appointed by the organizer.
8. Points will be awarded according to the score sheet.
9. Judges will collectively determine the placing by a clear majority vote.
10. Certificate of Recognition will be awarded to the 3rd, 2nd and 1st placers.
11. Decisions of the Board of Judges are final and irrevocable.

SPECIFIC RULES OF THE COMPETITION 


ELEMENTARY 
A. CREATIVE STORY READING (Grades 3 & 4) Each contestant will be handed the reading
material which he/she will read for 1 minute and for the contest proper he/she is going to
read the text artistically and creatively within 3-5 minutes. Contestants shall wear school
uniform. No microphone will be used. Judges may deduct points if competitors run over.
Contestants will be judged according to the following criteria. 
Volume and Clarity (clearly audible/enunciated )    35
Accuracy and fluency of speech 25
Expression  (voice modulation, facial expression)    20

SECONDARY 

C. DRAW & TELL (Grades 7 & 8) The contestants will read a common article within 2
minutes. After 2 minutes, the reading text will be collected and the contestants will
start interpreting what they read through a drawing. After the given time, the contestants will
be asked to explain their answer in 2-3 minutes.

D. SPOKEN WORD POETRY (Grades 9 & 10)

Spoken word poetry is performance poetry that is written on a page but performed for an
audience. It uses heavy rhythm, improvisation, free association, rhymes, rich poetic phrases,
word play and slang. It is more aggressive and “in your face” than more traditional forms of
poetry.

Mechanics

1. There shall be only 1 contestant per school.


2. The Spoken Word piece must be an original composition and is related to this year’s
Division Reading Month Theme.
3. Each contestant must submit a hard copy of the piece upon registration.
4. The contest will be done in person.
5. Contestant shall wear smart casual attire.
6. Contestant shall use microphone during the contest.
7. Musical accompaniment and background music are allowed.

 The Spoken Word Poetry uses concrete language including vivid images, sounds,
actions and other sensations.
 The content is relevant to the theme.
 The message is clearly conveyed.
B. Performance (40%)
 The Spoken Word Poetry is delivered in consideration of the following:
 Posture – Stands up straight, shoulders back, chin up, head held high
 Eye Contact – Does not stare at the floor, or hide behind whatever it is that the
contestant is reading from.
 Projection – Speaks loudly and clearly.
 Facial Expressions – Uses appropriate facial expressions to communicate the
message effectively.
 Gestures – Uses hand motions and body movements to emphasize different
elements of the performance.
C. Overall Impact (20%)
 The Spoken Word Poetry piece and the delivery are leading to the successful
conveyance of the message. The contestant employs the unique features of
performance poetry.

E. FILM TRAILER CONTEST ( Grades 11 & 12)

This competition opens an avenue of opportunities for the Senior High School participants
(from Grades 11 and 12) to explore the many aspects of video trailer production, including
sound, lighting, storyboarding, editing, and other key elements of quality video production. This
is with the intent to provoke a response from an audience that makes them wish the film truly
existed. In other words, one should provide a short preview or idea for a story without spilling
the entire account at all.
Additionally, the participants will showcase their impressive multimedia and ICT skills as
they plunge into the beauty, wonders, and depth of various Philippine literary texts, through the
production of a 3-minute film trailer, centered on the valuable elements of creativity, positive
themes, relevant content, general plot, and mood of the literary masterpiece.
Contest Rules/Guidelines:
1. The contest is open to all Senior High School students of the Division of San Pablo
City.
2. The film trailer content will be based on any Philippine Literary text of your choice.
3. Only ONE entry per school is allowed. Contestants in this competition should be
registered on or before October 31, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. through this link

4. The team should consist of 5 to 7 members who will take the roles of actors/actresses,
editor, writer, music supervisor, and film director. All members are allowed to be seen
in the trailer.

5. All entries should be original. We highly discourage participants from grabbing


snippets of video scenes from other online video sources and creating a trailer based

on a movie or television series due to potential copyright infringement issues. Failure
to follow will be subjected to disqualification.
6. The film trailer should only run for a maximum of three (3) minutes.
7. Participants are allowed to do in-person or online shoots, given that necessary health
protocols will be observed.
8. Video should be in high quality and meet these specs: 16:9 screen format, 30fps &
1080x720 pixels or 1920x1080 pixels.
9. The video formats that will be accepted for review and judging are. MP4, .MOV
and .AVI.
10. Participants are encouraged to seek creative ideas and content that is aspirational
and acceptable to an all-age audience and should not contain any offensive and
inappropriate language, images, or scenes.

The coaches are in-charge of submitting the videos using their DepEd email addresses.
12.Deadline for submission of entries is on November 21,2022, 5:00 pm.
13.The decisions of the judges shall be final and irrevocable.
14.The 1st to 3rd winners in the film trailers will be shown on the culminating activity of
the RACE. Only the winners shall be present during the awarding on November
26,2022.
15. Any violation of the stated rules and guidelines will result to disqualification.

TEACHER’S CATEGORY

F. EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING CONTEST - There shall be a separate contest to both


elementary and secondary teachers. Each contestant will be given 3 minutes for the
preparation and 3 minutes for the delivery of his/her piece. There will be a deduction of
points for under time and over time delivery of the speech. The topic shall be given by the
judges.
