Activity 1 Finals Chapter-8 Elements of Drama

1. Drama - In literature, a drama is the performance of written discourse to depict

fictional or non-fictional events (either prose or poetry). Dramas can be staged,
filmed, or broadcast on the radio. Dramas are commonly referred to as plays,
and their authors are referred to as "playwrights" or "dramatists."

2. Origin of Drama - Drama may be traced back to Athens, when ancient chants
known as dithyrambs were chanted in honor of the god Dionysus. Later, these
hymns were adapted for choral processions in which participants wore
costumes and masks.

3. Development of Drama - The majority of ancient Greek and Roman tragedies

dealt with people's religious rituals. The religious components were
instrumental in the creation of theater. Because most of the Bible was written
in Latin, ordinary people were unable to comprehend its contents.

• Miracle Plays - Miracle play, also known as Saint's Play, was one of the three
main types of vernacular drama in Europe throughout the Middle Ages (along
with the mystery play and the morality play). A miracle drama depicts the life,
miracles, or martyrdom of a saint, whether true or not. Liturgical offices founded
in the 10th and 11th centuries to improve calendar festivals gave rise to the
genre.

• Mystery Plays - One of three major types of vernacular drama in Europe

throughout the Middle Ages was the mystery play (along with the miracle play
and the morality play). The mystery plays, which mainly show biblical subjects,
evolved from plays performed in Latin on church grounds and represented such
subjects as the Creation, Adam and Eve, Abel's murder, and the Last Judgment.

• Zarzuela - The dramatic action is carried out by an alternating blend of song and
speech in zarzuela, a type of Spanish or Spanish-derived musical theatre. The
libretti (production texts) cover a wide range of topics, from Greco-Roman
mythology to contemporary life in Madrid, former Spanish colonies, and other
regions with a substantial Hispanic population. The majority of zarzuelas feature
vocal group pieces (such as trios and duets), lyrical solo songs known as
romanzas, various types of local folk music, and dancing.
• Moro Moro - The earliest known form of organized theatre in the Philippines,
moro-moro, also known as comedia, was founded by Spanish monks. Apart from
epic recitations, any indigenous theatrical forms that may have existed before to
the arrival of the Spanish were eliminated in order to assist the spread of
Christianity.
