Charlie and Lisa

Script Revision

INT. KITCHEN. DAY.

CHARLIE is sitting on a chair looking bemused. LISA is on the

other side of the kitchen unit making tea. CHARLIE is
repeatedly trying to say something to LISA, but stops himself
before starting each time. There is visible bruising on LISA’s
face

CHARLIE
[HESITANTLY]

[FRUSTRATEDLY]

CUT

EXT. FRONT GARDEN. DAY.

CHARLIE and LISA are leaving the house with some luggage. LISA
is talking on the phone.

LISA
[ON PHONE, IN SPANISH]

<Yes mum, I know! I... mum! We're leaving for the cabin now! I’ll call you
when we get there.> 

LISA glances at CHARLIE whom is growing increasingly impatient. He signals her to hurry
up.

LISA
[ON PHONE, IN SPANISH]

<Mum... Charlie needs this. I need this. We just need to forget about what
happened for a week and everything will be okay again.>

LISA’s mother says something inaudible

LISA
[ON PHONE, IN SPANISH]

I love you too, bye.

LISA puts the luggage in the back of the van, the camera focuses on her wrist, also bruised,
as she rubs it with her other hand. LISA then enters the van, and CHARLIE greets her with a
tight, forced smile

CHARLIE

Took you long enough.

LISA

Well, what do you expect…

INT. CAR. DAY.

CHARLIE is driving the car, he has a more genuine smile on his face now. He glances over
at LISA who is distracted by her phone and the smile fades from his face.

CHARLIE

Looking forward to this week then? Be nice, just the two of us in the woods
together.

LISA
[DISTRACTED]

Mhm…

CHARLIE is visibly annoyed by this

CHARLIE
[SARCASTICALLY]

Oh, Lisa, we’re going off the cliff!

LISA does not respond and continues tapping away at her phone. CHARLIE begins to look
vaguely psychotic.

CUT

EXT. FOREST ENTRANCE. DAY.

Long shot of CHARLIE and LISA entering the woods through a clearing by the road.
CHARLIE stops to make sure the van is locked and LISA walks ahead. CHARLIE runs to
catch up with her and puts his arm around her shoulder, but she quickly shrugs him off. After
a moment, he goes to hold her hand, but is rejected again.

CUT – POV, LISA

EXT. WOODS. DAY.

LISA is trailing slightly behind CHARLIE as the pair walk deeper into the woods. CHARLIE
seems chipper and optimistic about the walk.

LISA
[INTERNAL MONOLOGUE]

The doctor said we need to communicate better but, I don’t want to upset you.
Poor guy, I can’t imagine how much you must be hurting. 

CUT – VARIOUS ESTABLISHING SHOTS OF THE WOODS

CUT – POV, CHARLIE

EXT. WOODS. DAY.

Stupid bitch and her phone. Talks to her boss and her fucking mother all the
time but has to find her courage before she talks to me. Does she think I’m
stupid? On the fucking thing 24/7 for “work” but I’m cheating when I look at
Sarah Once. That was window shopping at best.

EXT. WOODS. DAY.

CHARLIE and LISA are walking on a wider path, still in the woods. CHARLIE is talking at
LISA as she walks on

CHARLIE

So, it’s not me, you understand, right? Mum’s just gotten to me is all, I’m not
like that, you get me right?

LISA’s phone rings, and she swiftly answers it. CHARLIE is shocked by this and
immediately looks annoyed.

LISA
[ON PHONE]

Oh hi! No I’m fine, did you get everything sorted out?

CHARLIE angrily gestures at her.

Oh haha, no that’s just Charlie! Everything’s fine, I booked the week off.

CHARLIE
[INTO PHONE]

Oi, bellend, she did book the time off!

LISA angrily gestures at CHARLIE to back off.

 LISA
[ON PHONE]

No, everything is okay!

LISA continues to talk on the phone as CHARLIE grows more and more annoyed by the
second. He gestures one last time at LISA and the two walk out of shot, LISA still on the
phone.

CUT

EXT. LAKE OUTSKIRTS. DAY.

LISA is walking ahead of CHARLIE, the two are not talking to each other. As they walk into
a more clear area, LISA stops and begins assertively talking to CHARLIE.

LISA
[ITALICS]

Let’s just talk about it

CHARLIE
[BOLD]

Talk about what?

You know what! You didn’t have to be so rude earlier!

When?

When I was on the phone!

You’re always on the phone!

Well it’s not my fault I had to book a week off last minute!

Whatever

Let’s also talk about what’s been going on with you

What about me?

Your Mum?

Oh what? My Mum dies, I get sad and I get better!

My Mum told me we need to work on these things!

Oh well she would say that wouldn’t she? Same way she says everything
you should to because you can’t think for yourself!
 Oh fuck off! Look, I know it’s been hard okay? And I’ve been trying to be
understanding, but you have an anger problem! And let’s not forget the Sarah
thing!

Oh what about Sarah? I looked at her once! It was window shopping at

best.

Oh what? Do you want a medal for doing the bare minimum?

What’s the bare minimum?

I don’t know, maybe don’t fuck her?

Maybe she would fuck me!

You know what? You can Sarah can have each other. Fuck you!

LISA storms off as CHARLIE looks evermore bewildered.

CUT, CHARLIE POV

EXT. NARROW WOODLAND PATH. DAY.

LISA is walking through the woods alone, however Charlie is following her. He begins to run
towards her as LISA turns around and is shocked to see him. The shot then suddenly cuts to
LISA’s phone lying on the floor. The camera zooms out as LISA’s Mother calls her, and
LISA’s hand can be seen laid down on the floor.

EXT. THE HOUSE. DAY.

CHARLIE walks out of the house alone, he looks distressed and upset. He locks the door and
walks off.

EXT. PARK. DAY.

CHARLIE walks to a park bench and sits down. He stares at the floor for a while, when a
woman suddenly walks by him. It’s LISA. She is wearing different clothes, and looks
significantly more beat up and messy. CHARLIE is astonished to see this. LISA turns and
smiles at CHARLIE before walking off.
