A fire pump delivers water through a
300mm diameter main to a hydrant to
which is connected a cotton rubber-
lined fire base 100mm in diameter
terminating in a 25mm nozzle as shown
in the figure. The nozzle is 2.5m above
the hydrant and 16m above the pump.
Assuming head loss due to friction of
3m from the pump to the hydrant, 2m
in the hydrant and 10m from the
hydrant to the base of the nozzle, and
a loss in the nozzle of 4% of the
velocity head in the jet, calculate the
vertical height of the jet if the gauge
pressure at the pump is 550kPa.
Therefore vertical height of the jet is
h= 24.10m if the gauge pressure at the
pump is 550kPa.
Water enters a motor through a 600 mm diameter pipe under a pressure of
14 kPa. It leaves through a 900 mm diameter exhaust pipe with a pressure of
4 kPa. A vertical distance of 2.50 m separates the center of the two pipes at
the sections where the pressures are measured. If 500 liters of water pass
the motor each second, calculate the power supplied to the motor in
horsepower
Horsepower
The 600mm diameter pipe shown delivers water from reservoir A to a
pressure turbine, which discharges through another 600mm diameter pipe
into tail race B. The head loss from A to 1 is 5 times the velocity head in the
pipe and the loss of head from 2 to B is 0.2 times the velocity head in the
pipe. If the discharge is 700 liters/second, what horsepower is given up by
the water to the turbine?
The Group 7 of BSCE-3C held a meeting virtually on this 12th
day of December to discuss and practice problems titled Liquids in
Motion: BE and Continuity Equation. We tried to analyse the
possible solutions and the possible ways of dealing with the
questions raised in the three (3) problems which were given. Though
the group finds it sharp, but with the sense of success, we did able
to expand our ideas. We believe that we linked well as all five of us
were able to make changes to any issue collaboratively.
Furthermore, there was an equal divide in the amount of work that
we all did; our contributions were fair and no one was lacking
behind.
Thank you !
